Review

Praise for The Adventures of Invisible Boy:

A Junior Library Guild selection

A Read with Jenna Junior Summer 2024 Pick

* “[Horner’s] unique humor throughout the text provides genuine laughs and unexpected character reactions. . . Horner pulls back for moments of serenity, as the two protagonists struggle with making friends and finding their place, which further adds to the charm and authenticity of a story that could easily have become cliché. His artistic style feels reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes, giving a simple and timeless feel to the book while simultaneously adding to the ridiculousness of the situations and the superhero action. A surprise hit.” –Booklist (starred review)

“Packed with witty humor and thrilling adventure, this graphic novel will draw fans of ‘Captain Underpants’ and belongs on middle grade library shelves. . . Horner skillfully delves into deep themes such as parental expectations, social acceptance, and self-worth in a manner that will resonate with middle graders. The exciting build-up to the epic climax of the story will keep readers wanting more and eager for the promised follow-up.” –
School Library Journal

“Horner channels vintage Cartoon Network–esque tomfoolery in this hilarious graphic novel romp . . . [The] illustrations are inviting, and the plot is replete with clever gags stuffed into every panel . . . An easy-going, fun-to-read treat that juxtaposes belly laughs with thoughtful explorations of anxiety.” —
Publishers Weekly

“Raucous . . . Action-packed artwork feels reminiscent of comic strips or animated shows . . . A fun-filled adventure that celebrates the true superpowers of the middle-grade imagination: chaos and creativity.” —
Kirkus Reviews

“On the first day of school, a new kid and an evil genius are about to collide. Our hero may be invisible
but The Adventures of Invisible Boy can't be missed!” —Max Brallier, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Kids on Earth

“Wonderfully fun and inventive! Doogie Horner is truly a mad scientist of comics, and he's created an endlessly delightful madcap adventure of mayhem and mischief in this book.
” —Chad Sell, author of The Cardboard Kingdom series

My grandson who is not an avid reader immediately sat down & read this start to finish in an hour! Then he gave me a summary of it! Wish this was a series

My 8-year old loved this book. She read it from cover to cover the first night. The only thing she disliked she said is that she wishes there were more farts.

My 9-year-old son enjoyed the story. When he finished, he immediately asked if we could get the next book.

My son loves a good graphic novel and this did not disappoint! He’s read it multiple times since receiving it and keeps asking when the next book will be released. If your kids enjoy Dog Man, Cat Kid, Captain Underpants..and the like..this will be a solid purchase.

My 9 yr old son LOVED this and read it multiple times. He repeatedly quotes some of the jokes from it. Can't wait for the next one!

We picked this up from a friend and loved it! My seven-year-old begged me to come look for the second book, but we didn't realize this one had only come out in January. We put it on our watchlist. It's a great book that had my quiet boy shouting with laughter :D

Both my 11-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son loved it. They each read it multiple times in a row, and I could heard them laughing in the other room.

My kids have read a lot of these middle-grade graphic novels (or whatever they're called) so I have seen quite a few, and I would rank this new book Invisible Boy among my favorites. It's very funny -- there is a lot of surreal humor all through the story. But it's also very sweet and touches briefly on the challenges of making friends at a young age. Most of all, the illustrations are INCREDIBLE. Every page of this book is beautifully detailed & beautifully colored, and the compositions are super-dynamic and imaginative. (And there are tons of little jokes hidden in many of the panels.) If you have an imaginative 9-year-old reader who devoured all of the Calvin & Hobbes books and wants to try something new, introduce that kid to INVISIBLE BOY!
