This is a faulty product. I should have done more research before purchasing because apparently it's a known issue. I have Arlo Pro cameras that have worked great for nearly 5 years, but after 3 weeks this Essential camera started disconnecting every week regardless of distance from the base station. Now after a few months it happens almost daily. On top of that, Arlo makes you pay a subscription in order to see the video recordings in your feed, which is not true of the original Arlo Pro cameras. You can enable recording to a USB stick, but you won't be able to see the recordings in the feed. Do not waste your money on this.

We put together an Arlo outdoor security camera + doorbell system 5 years ago. One by one, the cameras have each developed defects a year or two after the warranty expiration. Arlo has offered to replace them at a discount each time, but the discount is the same as Amazon's promotional sale price.

Aside from that, performance of the units is adequate, though not necessarily the best on the market. Video quality is adequate, field width is adequate (though I could use more), motion detector works without too many false activations or blinding in sunny weather. Temperature range in our location is about 10 degrees to 110 degrees, and the cameras work within that range. No weatherproofing issues. They say battery charge lasts about 3 months in normal use, and that's a believable high end for battery life, as long as there aren't more than perhaps a half dozen activations per day.

This is the 4th Arlo camera we have purchased. This is a great little camera! Easy to install, software is a breeze to figure out. Let’s face it… you would pay $$$$ for a hard-wired, top quality security system with a hefty monthly fee. Arlo wants a monthly fee to store videos once motion is detected. It’s worth it!! It’s still far more economical than getting an overpriced system. We use it for a range of about 10-12 feet away and it’s perfect. Picture quality is amazing for this little camera. Will definitely purchase more Arlo products in the future!! Wish the siren on the camera was just a little bit louder… but it serves its purpose for us

Far worse than Pro 4 system

I wanted to add one camera to my Arlo Pro 4 system with base station which works quite well. I thought this would be a good option as the individual Pro 4 XL is hard to get.

I was wrong. First I had to update the app, which is worse and more confusing than the original. Then it took multiple attempts to connect the camera despite the straightforward process. When it was finally connected I learned that to see the recordings on the Essential XL I had to go intoy base station settings and download the video, many more clicks than the previous app with the Pro 4 system.

To top it all off, once installed I went to add an activity zone some I'm not getting alerts from the street. Well that's a premium feature that needs a subscription now apparently. My camera was supposed to come with a free trial subscription but it didn't work. Frustrated, I signed up for the $24/mo subscription and was able to add an activity zone. However this activity zone only has 4 points you can manipulate, versus the 8 the Pro 4 cameras have, meaning your activity zones can only be square or rectangular, useless for my application.

Then I spent 54 minutes with Arlo "premium" support to try and get these concerns rectified, but all they could do was make a note for future development changes. I then said I wanted to refund, they said it would be prorated and I only used an hour of the premium service. I then went through the cancellation process and then was told it's not. In fact prorated, my premium subscription will be canceled in a month and there will be no refund.

After complaining to management, I finally got a full refund. This useless paperweight is going back to Amazon and I'm seriously reconsidering changing security systems all together. There are now much better much cheaper options on the market.

If the camera records absolutely NOTHING, no activity at all, maybe it'll last a year. But, c'mon people, a moderately busy yard drains the battery within weeks, not months. Good camera, software, and features otherwise.
