[No initial promotion of DYING WELL due to agent involvement]

AND SO THE DREAMS BECAME, when one day in 1989, as a freelance research writer for a well-known rare book house, I moonlighted my own fear of dying. I began in the impressive UCSB Library nearby. Intended to benefit family and friends too it became the research journey of a lifetime. It led to such as the Yale and British Libraries and to the emerging stars of the new field of death education, among them my mentor Robert Kastenbaum.

DYING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE is the last revised update and title of an early incarnation, and currently unknown beyond Amazon's website, friends and family. 80 this year, I hereby conclude a journey and legacy of which I am proud.

As for credentials; The originator and first Administrative Director of the Rice University Publishing Program, I subsequently assisted New York publishers in regional book promotion. I was a literary scout for editors at Random House and Harper Collins but soon hated writing nothing but rejection letters - with one funny and famous exception! Numerous early writing credits include a television scriptwriting award and a Children's Bicentennial Play now in the National Archives. A trained caseworker, following a move to Santa Barbara, I was a rare book research writer, professional Bereavement member of a VNA Hospice team, and a member of the Association for Death Education and Counseling. I produced an in-house training video for The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center. I now live outside Austin Texas where my passion is directed to higher education for foster students.

BEAUDY A TRUE STORY was written to be sold at Black Beauty Ranch. Since it does not fit the current children's illustrated book profile, I have never submitted it to a traditional publisher. Nevertheless, it has had remarkable popularity with BOTH children and *adults as uplifting grief therapy for the loss of a pet or human. Under the auspices of the Texas Humane Legislation Network, BEAUDY is in rural Texas' elementary schools' libraries touting humane animal treatment, and in 4-H Clubs; as well as in Texas children's hospitals and public libraries where requested. I "channeled" BEAUDY in one sitting. The broad generational age response to its education and spiritual mystery has been very gratifying!

This is a wonderful story that deeply touches your heart. I enjoyed reading this book very much; it shows you the way of love, care, compassion and connection that can happen between horses and humans. From my experience I know horses are very intuitive and intelligent and they understand us more than we know.
This book conveys an incredible magical way of friendship and trust between Beaudy, a rescue horse, and his owner. It shows you kindness and patience and it also can help someone going though a hard time of grief.
Connections like this one are precious and definitely something to cherish.
I would without any doubt recommend this book to others.

This is a beautiful story that every grandparent or parent should purchase to read to their children or have as one of the first books when children are just starting to read. They will love the storyline but most importantly how it is based on a true story. Truly magical and worth filling up children's reading lists everywhere. I highly recommend this book!

Beaudy is what publishers used to call a cross-over book. One that resonates for both the adult parent in the room and the child. There are many cross-over books in the wonderful world of children's literature - Black Beauty, A Christmas Carol, another The Little Prince.

Bed time is an ideal time to quietly read to your child. And because of the rich emotions in this well told story of a beloved horse and his relationship with the author - this book encourages worthwhile discussion between parent and child. It would also be of value for teachers - encouraging dialogues about love and loss in their classrooms.

The book celebrates the deep relationship between four legged friends who are companions and also much more ~ they often are -- our teachers. We just need to pay attention.

Beaudy is indeed a cross-over book that touches the readers hearts and addresses their feelings of friendship, respect, love, compassion and loss. An unforgettable little book that I encourage everyone to read,

My husband and I read to each other in the morning. We had to keep passing the book to one another because we were so moved to tears, we couldn't keep reading.
Beautiful story, beautifully written.
After reading this book, I want to be friends with the compassionate, intelligent, kind, sensitive author.
Thank you, Susan Barry.

Just a wonderful book, short and fine for children, but poignant and interesting for grownups, too. “Horse” books are always inviting, and this one goes well beyond that.

I loved this book and will share it with my children and grandchildren. Beaudy' story is first of all a true story and one of a strong relationship of love and trust developed between this horse and his owner. To experience these emotions and to have such a supportive connection in ones life is of great value to finding happiness. Even when there is loss at Beaudy's death the strong connection continues making the loss less painful and the lessons learned of eternal value. Children and adults who have experienced loss of a pet or a human bond will find comfort in this inspirational story.
