When I opened it and began reading the first chapter, I closed it again with dismay. "I'm not looking for a child's book; What is this?" I thought to myself. I went on to some of the other books, but they felt so clinical, so dry. Not only that, but in the grief-stricken haze of my mind, I felt I just could not absorb what they were saying. There were words, and they just did not seem to sink in.
After finishing one book and trying another, and still feeling no ease in my pain, I opened up Bill at Rainbow Bridge again. I began reading, and this time I seemed to absorb the words. I could see the images in my mind, I could relate to David, Bill's human guardian, and what he was going through. His feelings of confusion, his inability to move on, his desperate need to find relief. The storybook quality was exactly what I needed to sink into my distraught mind and heart. Its beautiful simplicity and honesty finally reached me where the more "clinical" and explanatory style books simply did not connect.
I feel now this is the first book one should reach for when they are in those raw depths of grief, where you feel like a lost child and all the "logical explanations" for what you are going through do nothing to comfort you. Bill at Rainbow Bridge gives peace, gives you finally a sigh of relief and puts a salve on your hurt.
It's a small and simple book, but not simplistic--perfect for someone in grief. If you've read "Charlotte's Web," you'll understand what I'm grasping to explain. It's a book that that be read by all ages, and they'll all get 'something' useful out of it. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves their animals. Go ahead and buy 2 or 3 copies because you'll want to give some away at some point. The sad fact is, our animals don't stay with us nearly long enough. This book won't make the pain go away, but it's like wrapping yourself in a quilt of loving comfort. It's a good beginning on the road to healing, and it helps show you the way to do it--and that you aren't alone.
"Bill at the Rainbow Bridge" acknowledges this bond between animals and their humans. For this alone, it is worth buying. Although I do not yet believe the Rainbow Bridge exists (as much as I want to), I was comforted by the love of the protagonist, David Jackson, has for his bulldog, Bill, who has passed away. The stories of David's life with Bill are wonderfully heartwarming. Indeed, I was encouraged when David felt strong enough to adopt another senior bulldog, Roxie. The reunions of the departed with their people made me cry everytime. The upshot is that it is a simple yet gripping little story of reassurance for those of us who have lost our loved ones: love is a bond that is never extinguished. And...it is okay to love your animals as much as you love anything in your life.
The illustrations are particularly lovely. They are in shadows of black and white, and greys. I thought this was appropriate for a place we cannot access with our material eyes: the other place is beautiful in a way of which we cannot conceive.
Do buy this book.
My dog Betsey was my "Bill" and I was so shocked and heartbroken after her sudden illness and death that I was just numb, I couldn't even cry,. She was my joy in life and without her, I was literally lost, barely going through the motions every day.
A year later, I knew I needed to do something to pull myself out of this terrible depression and I started looking for books, tapes, anything to deal with my grief. That's when I found "Bill at Rainbow Bridge".
Just a few pages in and for the first time, the tears started to flow and they continued non-stop through the entire book. And the same thing happens every time I read it. I identified with everything that Dan went through when he lost Bill.
But this book did more than just provide me with a much needed release of pent-up grief, it gave me hope. Hope that my Betsey is happy at the Rainbow Bridge as well and that someday, when I cross over it, that she'll be waiting there for me and we'll be together again.
So, if you're also suffering from the loss of your best friend, do yourself a favor and buy this book. You won't regret it.
