This "Dune: Part Two" film essentially completes the first novel while doing some bits and pieces of forecasting into Dune Messiah. Like the first film, Villeneuve obviously highly respects the origin material but like many modern main-stream directors has to play into limited attention spans and limited time restraints by chopping out or minimizing some characters and shortening or removing other plot devices as well as heed modern political and social notions of our day that are were not present when Herbert's sci-fi masterpieces were written. For folks like me who grew up on these novels back in the 60's and 70's it can be a bit frustrating. Like where's the Spice Guild? Or why does Chani turn into a modern "girl power" character rebelling against Paul? But it has to be said that the director and his co-writer do the best job they can in balancing all of these requirements and creating two of most entertaining and visually inspired sci-fi films this side of 2001 Space Odyssey or Blade Runner. For many fans of the original novels this gives us a physical realization of the textures, sounds and mind's eye vistas that we saw in our heads reading the novels now presented as stunning reality on the screen filling our eyes and ears with the world of Dune. The two films just "feel" right. David Lynch's 1984 film and the later Sci-Fi channel series tried their best, but this current adaptation strikes the closest note. The blend of both practical effects and CGI is amazing. Hans Zimmer's score is among the best things he's done. The acting is solid without over dramatizing or self-parody. Let's see what a Part Three brings to the table. Fingers crossed!
The 4K UHD releases of these films are pure state of the art. Fans might be disappointed in the lack of IMAX aspect ratio, but the fixed 2.39:1 ratio Dolby Vision image is still stunning on any modern display. The genius of first scanning at 4K then bringing down to a 35mm film base then going back to a 4k scan is so perfect in giving the "Dune" feel. A type of ancient cast to the visual feel with almost a sense of film grain but with the modern resolution of 4K. Amazing. Colors are clear and not over blown. Deep blacks and brilliant whites are seen. The subtle blue of the Spice infected Freeman eyes. The textures of buildings and grains of sand. This is pure eye candy.
The Dolby Atmos sound is also state of the art. I was gripping my couch with both hands at the stunning sound field and LFE effects going full tilt. Subtle winds and voices in the background. The crunch and rumble of the sand worms. The various ambiances to the various interior scenes. And of course, the Zimmer score blazing away. Your sound bar or surround system will be pushed to its maximum. And if you're trying to listen to this on TV speakers, well good luck! Just wow!
There are several short and interesting featurettes included giving some nice behind the scenes looks.

Epic Movie - Dune 2
This Dune series of movies is fantastic. Sci-fi at its best! Can't wait for the next one. The Dune movies are based on the Dune book series which predated almost all Sci-fi genre. This sets the standard for Sci-fi.
