What a great first book by Janice Dean "The Weather Machine"! Freddy the Frogcaster is a delightful story of a young frog named Freddy who just loves to learn about and forecast the weather. Janice does a great job of telling a cute story while teaching youngsters about the weather. Children will love how Freddy gains his knowledge about forecasting the weather and how he uses that knowledge to save the day for the town's picnic. Mixed in with the story are meteorological terms that children will learn as they read. The glossary in the back is very informative to help explain the words in depth. The cast of characters in the book will make you smile: Sally Croaker, meteorologist for the Frog News Network and Mrs. Fibian, Freddy's teacher are two of my favorites. Not only is the story cute and humorous, it also teaches a lesson. Freddy helped the mayor and the town by warning of nasty weather that could disrupt the town's picnic and put the frogs in danger. What I liked is how the mayor trusted Freddy, even though he's a young frog. There are great lessons there. The illustrations are colorful and humorous and will keep a child's attention. With an entertaining story and wonderful illustrations, this is a must have book for children. Adults will enjoy it, too, as I have!

Freddy the Frogcaster entertains while also teaching kids to love learning. Meteorologist Janice Dean combines her weather expertise with Russ Cox's engaging, humorous illustrations for a story that's irresistible to both child and parent.
The text is inspiring and fun to read aloud. Freddy is a froggy who has loved weather since he was a baby. He studies weather patterns and shares them at show-and-tell and everywhere else he can. When the local TV meteorologist fails to do her job well, the town turns to Freddy. This little guy saves the day just in time for the big Leapfrog Picnic.
Kids are inspired to study up on their own areas of interest. For those fascinated by Freddy's favorite field, there are several pages of meteorological definitions and explanations at the end of the book.
My 7-year-old nephew loves it, and so does my 22-month-old son. Lately it's the only book he's grabbing from the bookshelf. I think younger kids are drawn in by the pictures, while older ones love that it's the little guy to the rescue.

This is rating is based on my Mom's reaction since I got it for her as a gift. My mother loves children's books, is a grandmother and has great respect for Janice Dean. Janice Dean is a meteorologist on Fox News and before Harvey (the hurricane) hit, she correctly predicted that Houston would get 51" of rain. This book is the first in a series of books she has written on weather for children. It includes a page where she encourages kids to look outside at the clouds and identify the type that they see, etc. It's a great book to introduce kids to weather. (Her other books focus on specific weather conditions, i.e.: flash floods, tornadoes, etc).

This book is excellent for understanding weather and the terminology for children (and adults) to comprehend. The cartoons of the frogs and other characters are excellent. I liked the explanation of the terms used at the end of book... very helpful. The cartoons are cute as well as descriptive in mood and expression. Highly recommended for young children. Adults will also learn items from this book.

I just downloaded the kindle version of this book to read to my grandson. He's still pretty young so he'll like the artwork and will grow into the story. However, for an older child, especially a reader, this story is adorable and the learning resources at the back of the book are exceptional. It makes learning about weather forecasting fun and easy. I recommend it for young readers. I am still laughing about frogs eating "fried cricket sandwiches." Weather forecaster and author, Janice Dean, did an excellent job with this book. It should inspire many kids to want to learn more about weather and forecasting and teaches a valuable lesson about being prepared! There are a few more good life lessons tucked in there, too.

The book has bright and colorful pictures, and a good storyline where working hard at what you enjoy will have its rewards. Some large words that must be explained to younger folks - e.g. meteorologist, barometer, etc... but they have to learn them sometime so why not now. The term "frogcasting" is innovative, however again, the younger folks may not make the translation to forecast without a little help at first. I recommend it and recommend mom or dad or grand ma or pa read along so all can learn together. In the back are meteorological terms explained after the story depending on the age. A fun book. A good story. Some words that may need to be explained but words they will hear everyday in the weather reports.

I bought the whole Freddy series for my 5 YO granddaughter because she's always asking questions about weather. She reads at a third grade level but her mom still sits with her to answer new questions. She loves the books. I was a little anxious when I bought the one on tornadoes, because she's afraid of any thunderstorm--thinks a tornado might take her house away or hurt her and her parents. The book helped her better understand rain, hail, thunder, etc, and now she is MUCH less fearful when she hears thunder or sees dark clouds. She understands what's happening, what to do if the storm is really bad, and she's not really afraid like before. Thank you, Janice Dean, for calming her with information!

I am always looking for new books to read to my kids. This was good. It was abit long for my 4 year old and not super engaging, but a cute story. Its just not a book my son would want to read every day!
