    I love opal Icemaker. It makes ice fast. You can set schedules too. Since I have mine turned off during the day while nobody is using it because no one is home. Then turn a couple hours before people arrive home to make ice. When is set to turn around 11 PM. This allows, the ice to melt some overnight and then it turns back on at 9 AM.It makes great nugget ice, crunch, and chewable. I make my coffee every day with it, and I always chew the ice. Somehow, the ice actually absorbs the coffee, so it melts throughout the day it turns into drinkable coffee. Just awesome. Go ahead buy it!Make sure you pick up the extra water tank and get yourself a water filter for it. Otherwise you have to put filtered water in. I just put tapwater in mine because there’s the filter inside. Without the side tank, you’ll be filling the water a bit, especially if you use it frequently

    This is our 3rd opal (bought the first one from the original manufacturer, the 2nd one from GE after they bought it, and now this one). The first two both lasted approximately 18-24 months, while being used pretty much 24 hours a day. Both of them eventually failed because the hard water in our city eventually overwhelmed the pump motor and cause the machine to fail. It is very apparent that we are not the only customers to have experienced this problem....this version of it comes with far more explicit instructions on how to prepare the water that you put into the unit, along with features that will remind you when to clean and/or de-scale the machine. It seems to be running quieter than the previous version (of course the previous version started getting pretty loud just before it failed, so not 100% sure it is quieter than the previous version before the hard water scale built up in it). We plan to follow the instructions very closely, and we are using a water distiller to prepare the water before using it for ice....we will see if it holds up longer. I will plan to give an update after several months of using it given the new instructions.

    I've had my unit just under 2 years. Regular cleaning, and only use purified or reverse osmosis water. It now runs in constant defrost mode and all my ice melts almost as soon as it's made. I also get a continuous "add water" notice even when the bin and side tank are full. The machine has recently started SQUEALING and loudly when refilling. Talk about extremely annoying. I reached out to GE with photos, videos, proof of purchase and details about what was happening and they send me a generic copy/pasted descaling cleaning solution (they clearly don't read emails because I mentioned all that I've done for care so far) When I replied asking for my options GE told me I could contact a repair company (they charge hundreds) or purchase a new unit.... LOL. I'm not paying another $600 (I got the black one) for it to crap out again. I'm hugely disappointed because it does make good ice WHEN IT WORKS.

    The GE makes great ice and lots of it and it has a self-cleaning mode.

    For comparison, we had a Costway that broke after three years of continuous use. Its fan was loud when making ice, but its smaller ice bin filled quickly, so it didn't run for very long. It worked great, but it was very difficult to clean, requiring about 45 minutes with a toothbrush and flashlight to get the gunk out of its depths.

    The GE's fan is almost silent, but the compressor makes a low omnidirectional 118 hertz hum at about 62 decibels. It's quieter than the Costway, but the GE makes more ice so it runs for longer periods.

    Interestingly, my wife commented that the GE is louder. So psychologically, the longer (but quieter) run time seems noisier.

    The sound might not be a problem if you have a loud household (kids, TV, dogs, etc.).

    If you have a quiet household with a kitchen that's open to the living room and the ice maker is sitting on your countertop, then you might be annoyed.

    We put the ice maker in our walk-in pantry, so it's out of sight and its sound is muted.

    Despite the GE's weird loud-quietness, I think I'd still pick it because of its capacity, self-cleaning capability, the type of ice it makes, the lighted ice bin, and, being a $$ quality GE Profile product, it should last a lot longer (hope).

    It can be controlled via an app which works with Google Home and presumably Alexa too, but unless turning the unit and bin light on/off remotely is a compelling feature, it’s not worth loading and configuring yet another third party middleware app (i.e., Smart HQ) to do so.

    At first, I was skeptical about getting this for my wife as a birthday gift because of the price - I wondered if it was really worth it. Now that we've had it for almost a year, I can tell you it is DEFINITELY worth it! This ice maker is so amazing! It actually promotes hydration - you WANT to drink more water because you just love the ice! I was impressed at how fast the ice starts being made after turning it on. It does make a slight humming noise but it's at such a low decibel level so it's barely noticeable.

    You do have to take good care of it though. Read the cleaning instructions and take the time to clean it on a regular basis. But do NOT try to open the top of the unit. It's very difficult to pry open and it's not worth the trouble. Just use the two cleaning methods that are mentioned in the manual... and you'll have great tasting ice in no time.

    Our friends and family love when we have this ice ready when they come over! It's like getting Chick-Fil-A ice for free!
