INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • READ WITH JENNA’S APRIL BOOK CLUB PICK • The Husbands delights in asking: how do we navigate life, love, and choice in a world of never-ending options? (“A bottomless champagne flute of a novel —The Washington Post)

When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem—she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, they’ve been together for years.

As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

The Husbands was Fantastic!

The Husbands by Holly GramazioI read as an Audiobook 🎧 Narrator: 🇬🇧Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 STARSGenre: Magical RealismI loved this book immensely and immediately. I knew very quickly this would be a five star read for me. I could feel it in my bones. As long as the ending was good, I thought maybe it would even become an all-time favorite. This is easily a top read of the year for me!Lauren, swaps lives effortlessly when husbands descend from the attic one-by-one. And when they’ve worn out their welcome with her, she sends them right back, and a new one takes his place. Each life is different from the last and Lauren learns more about herself from the relationships she has with others than she ever thought possible. This book was very Rebecca Serle-esque, and was right in line with her style of magical realism. I am so glad I found it. This will be a book I recommend to friends.

The Husbands is the debut novel from Holly Gramazio and is a great read!

A man claiming to be Lauren’s husband appears suddenly in her apartment one night. No explanation. It doesn’t take Lauren long to figure out that something is happening in her attic - it’s sending her husbands. When one husband goes up, another comes down. Lauren is then set on a path to finding the exact right husband, the one with every characteristic she’s imagined for her perfect partner. What she discovers, though, is sometimes there are too many choices.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The plot is intriguing, it’s thought provoking and quite funny. I laughed at some of the reasons one husband or another was immediately sent back to the attic. I thought quite a bit about the options all of the husbands came with - like options on a new car and how there’s no such thing as a 100% perfect partner or relationship. Lauren could have gone through thousands of husbands only never to be satisfied. It was interesting how each husband provided a new set of friends, decor, situations and how so many elements of Lauren’s lives overlapped. I found the ending of the book really satisfying and can’t wait for more books from Gramazio.

You’ll enjoy The Husbands. Read it and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss.

It’s so-so. Lauren comes home from her friend’s bachelorette to discover a random husband in her house. Turns out her attic is procuring husbands for her to try, if they don’t work out she can just send them back up to the attic and POOF a new husband appears. I just felt the whole story was a hot mess, especially the ending. It’s like Lauren lost her mind there for a moment, which I guess hundreds of husbands later kinda makes sense she went nutty. I didn’t think she was particularly likable and with so many husband characters coming in and out, the book could have used a stronger main character. It needed an anchor, someone instantly lovable to draw you in. Not for me.

Each time her husband goes up the ladder to the attic, a different one comes down. Some are handsome; some are less so. Short, tall, neat, messy, good jobs, bad jobs. Everything changes — almost — with each one. There’s a lot she learns about herself and how marriage works best for her. The ending will surprise you.

I stuck with the book even though the constant changing of husbands got monotonous after a while. I assumed the ending would explain why the attic could generate new husbands or at least let her end up with one of the husbands she had clicked with. Nope. In fact after the next to the last husband I actually developed a strong dislike for the lead character. It was a waste of time. Just because a book has a new concept apparently doesn’t mean it will also have a satisfying or even good ending. I do not recommend.

Overall this was a good story. I had a difficult time deciding who the primary characters were because they were not well developed in the beginning of the story (her sister, neighbors, etc.). I finally made a list and then was able to follow along. The changing of the husbands and her surroundings/situation was a unique and interesting concept. Some chapters read well while others didn't seem to add value and could have been edited out, so yes this book was maybe a bit too long.
