Review
★ "Eight-year-old Olu visits her mother's family in Ijebu, Nigeria, as they observe Eid al-Adha . . . A loving embrace of faith and family and a wonderful window into Nigerian culture" - Kirkus Reviews, starred review.
"A book that teaches readers about Eid al-Adha, while enchanting them with a special story. A young girl is in a car on the way to Baba's house in Ijebu. It takes a long time to get to Baba's house, so readers know this isn't a frequent trip but a treasured journey to be with loved ones. Once there, it is the smell of Baba rising "slowly from his seat...his scent of native black soap and mothballs" that surrounds the girl in an embrace she wants to remember.
In the beginning, readers are transported to a hot, sweaty traffic jam with the smell of "crunchy dundun and sweet puff puff frying" that makes the girl's stomach growl. This humanizing moment—loud and embarrassing and funny, all at the same time—is relatable for readers, who will automatically be enamored from this point. Emenanjo writes like a veteran, with words that cling to thoughts and resonate with all the senses: the sounds and smells linger.
VERDICT A story to be read again and again. Good for the entire family, and a must-have for middle school libraries." - School Library Journal

She needed help with pronouncing non English names and words. So it might be best to read along with someone who is familiar with the rhythm of the lingo. “Ice water tuture” is a familiar chant in my house right now.
Well written and vibrantly illustrated. Thank you for preparing my daughter for Lagos through story telling.
What a beautiful book! The following is part of a poem in the book and gives you a glimpse of the beautifully written words and the soul that carries throughout:
"One family, many beliefs
The beauty of faith,
tradition, and love"
It truly is a book filled with beauty, faith, tradition, and love.
Olu, an 8-year-old Nigerian girl whose household holds to both Catholic and Muslim traditions, is traveling to Ijedu to spend Eid with her Muslim family. There she plays traditional games with cousins, sees street vendors, and helps aunties cook for the feasts—all presented in a back-and-forth of equally beautiful prose and poetry, with vibrant illustrations that further the soulful feel. Included in the back of the book were nonfiction sections on Nijeria; traditional food, games, and fashion; pronunciation guides for the interspersed Yoruba; author and illustrator notes; and my personal favorite, a recipe for Nigerian Puff Puff.
I loved every word of this book and have already shared with my library patrons. I do recommend this for kids older than the suggested 4+ age range, as it is quite wordy and requires a lot of explanation for younger readers, who tend not to have the required attention span.
Such a joyous tale of family and celebration. Like many modern families, they don't all share the same belief systems but that does not stop them from celebrating together. Even the language barrier between Olu and her baba does not stop their love from shining through. As with any great gathering there is great food. You won't want to miss the recipe for puff puff (sweet fried dough) in the back as well as the extra info on the culture and life in Nigeria and Emenanjo’s personal experiences.
The premise of I'll See You in Ijebu is the Catholic branch of a family eager to get to Ijebu for the Eid celebrations with the Muslim branch of the family. As a Catholic, I love seeing people of my faith represented going about their daily lives. The story focuses on the journey to family - the religions are incidental; It is the travel and the treasured time together that are focal. Beautiful, relatable, and accessible on many levels!
Back matter includes more information on Nigeria plus an author's and an illustrator's note.
