NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK: The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, CNN, Lit Hub, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Reader's Digest, BookRiot, SheReads, PureWow, Publishers WeeklyFrom the iconic internationally bestselling author of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy: A forbidden affair erupts volcanically amid a decadent tropical wedding in this outrageous comedy of manners.

"Imagine Crazy Rich Asians mated with Saltburn and you've got Lies and Weddings—a heavenly summertime read!"—Plum Sykes, New York Times best-selling author of Bergdorf Blondes

Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a problem: the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister’s wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who’s-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.

Should he marry Solène de Courcy, a French hotel heiress with honey blond tresses and a royal bloodline? Should he pursue Martha Dung, the tattooed venture capital genius who passes out billions like lollipops? Or should he follow his heart, betray his family, squander his legacy, and finally confess his love to the literal girl next door, the humble daughter of a doctor, Eden Tong? When a volcanic eruption burns through the nuptials and a hot mic exposes a secret tryst, the Gresham family plans—and their reputation—go up in flames.

Can the once-great dukedom rise from the ashes? Or will a secret tragedy, hidden for two decades, reveal a shocking twist?

In a globetrotting tale that takes us from the black sand beaches of Hawaii to the skies of Marrakech, from the glitzy bachelor pads of Los Angeles to the inner sanctums of England’s oldest family estates, Kevin Kwan unfurls a juicy, hilarious, sophisticated and thrillingly plotted story of love, money, murder, sex, and the lies we tell about them all.

Enjoyed and highly recommend if you loved the author's previous series!
I loved the Crazy Rich Asians series when I read it years ago, so I was ecstatic to see the author had a new release coming out and I was going to have the opportunity to read it as well. Although this book wasn't quite as good as that series for me, I still very much enjoyed it and would recommend! You get the humor and the satire, the romance and the pining, and to dip your toes into the lives of the rich and extravagant and all the drama that entails. Oh! And also the Bravo references with Captain Lee playing a cameo role as the captain of one of their yachts while also giving us Kate Chastain references (but seriously can we have her back on our screens?!) What more could you ask for in a book? I think if you enjoyed his previous series than you will definitely want to check this one out.I loved Eden! She was obviously my favorite character in this book and she brings the sensibility into this world of such frivolous, over the top characters. She's all of us while experiencing this world. But she's way more of saint than I ever would be if I was having to deal with someone as horrible and obnoxious as Arabella. 😅 Although annoying, Arabella really brought the drama and was a necessary evil to making this story so entertaining.I stayed interested in the story throughout and really liked how the book played out. We get dual timelines starting out with a flashback reliving a traumatic event to then seeing how it becomes relevant to the current time and characters this book revolves around. As I mentioned earlier, this felt similar to his previous series, Crazy Rich Asians, so if you enjoyed that, like watching reality tv, enjoy a good escapism book, and it even gave me Magnolia Parks/Daisy Haites vibes, especially with the footnotes (but these footnotes weren't overly excessive and were actually funny),then I think you'd enjoy this book!

I love Kevin Kwan books. The characters are so clever and the opulence is just entertaining. I love to imagine all of the fancy places Eden went to. The descriptions were mesmerizing. It was so fun to travel from Hawaii to London, LA and Venice. I’d like to imagine being one of the people who enjoys the secret places only known by the Uber rich. I would have given it a 5 but some of the social lecturing took a bit away. Other than It was such a fun read. I highly recommend if you are looking for an entertaining light read. If you like Kevin Kwans other books you will not be disappointed.

Despite the fact that this book has the exact same core plot lines as Crazy Rich Asians (a love story involving the son of a wealthy family who is a down-to-Earth, wonderful person despite having growing up in a gilded world and having a controlling, conniving, social climbing mother; a female love interest who is a low key, independent, hardworking, fantastic person whom the boy’s mother views as far to “common” to ever marry her son), I love the book and burned through it.

Interestingly, the novel appears to take place in the same universe as Crazy Rich Asians… as Kwan has Augie’s love interest Maxxie run off on their honeymoon with a super wealthy Chinese woman named Kitty, who is presumably Kitty Pong. A nice twist that may show up in a future novel or film!

I read it in two sittings. It was fun enough and I laughed twice, but didn't pull me in or have me engrossed like the CRA trilogy, which I've reread a few times.

It felt a bit phoned in, like he asked ChatGPT to "rewrite Mansfield Park (with a splash of Pride & Prejudice) in the style of Kevin Kwan." The footnotes felt almost perfunctory, and the whole "I'm Trip Advisor telling you the top ten" felt a little old. Rufus and Eden were meh as heck. I'm so bored with how authors denote the heroine by making her someone who'll eat a carb (and still have the "boobs and butt of a goddess"). I'm amused that Kwan's idea of a good rich person is someone who likes to think of sustainable ways to stay rich and wears vintage expensive instead of brand new expensive. I'm very concerned about the possibility that he really thinks that a pregnancy test can accurately test for a pregnancy ensuing within days of coitus (there was no footnote to mark Arabella's insane assumption as impossible).

You know there will be fabulous couture, jewels, food and locations. You know there will be heros, heroines, and an amazing glamorous villain(s). And you pretty much know how it’s going to end. So the point of one of Kwan’s books is the twists and turns of the journey and this one has his bigger twist yet.

The only drawback is that, we know that Eden is fully aware of how ridiculous the people who surround her are, and how their lifestyle is a reflection of the overwhelming wealth gap we have in this country. We know this because she mentions it multiple times. And yet no one else cares and life goes on in their little 0.1 bubble. Maybe this, and the sub story of racism toward and in Asian communities is Kwan’s way of beginning to bring some balance to his fabulous tales if excess. Which are, don’t get me wrong, so much fun to read. But even fun books can give a nod to social responsibility. If these are baby steps, keep it up, Kevin.

Okay, Kevin Kwan is not Leo Tolstoy, and “Lies and Weddings” is NOT “War and Peace”. But, then again, who is and what is? Kevin Kwan is the author of four previously published novels, set in Singapore and London/Paris and other interesting waterholes for the insanely rich. His first book, “Crazy Rich Asians” was made into a fun movie that has done extremely well financially over the years. The producers of the movie seem unable to put together the succeeding movies-from-books in Kwan’s series. Covid, actors’ commitments, financial problems, writers’ quarrels over money and billing seem to have slowed the pace to a crawl to any sequel(s) to “Asians”. There shouldn’t be many problems with the future filmings of “Lies and Weddings” because the book looks ready-made for production.

I’ve long thought that weddings (and funerals, maybe) are the best settings for novels. You have love, bridezilllas, money issues, and a whole lot of emotional anguish. Kwan’s book seems written specifically for transfer to the big screen. His characters are mostly wealthy- either insanely or merely extremely - and seem only to wear “designer clothes”. They live and vacation in the trendiest places. They’re not you and me and that’s what’s fun about Kevin Kwan’s writing.

So, is “Lies and Weddings” a great book? No, but it is well-written for its intended audience. It’s a short, fun book which anyone who enjoyed Kevin Kwan’s back list should enjoy. And the inevitable movie.

SPOILERS!!
First of all the description is wrong, as the family’s financial ruin is still unbeknownst to Rufus and his mother at this sisters wedding… second: I really liked all 3 crazy rich books. Kevin Kwan has such a unique and fun style of writing. But this time it was really only names dropping (universities, food and fancy restaurants) and very narrow characters. Rufus and Eden are almost exactly like Nick and Rachel. He super rich but seemingly modest and not caring for money, she beautiful without attitude, smart and turns out to be an adopted super rich heiress. And who is telling her that she’s been adopted? Surprise her mother in law to be. Sounds way too familiar. And Arabella was just Eleno, a crazy bitchy mother who says only the worst things to her children (‘all beautiful women have eating disorders’) but in the end is accepted and even obeyed by her daughters despite her crazyness. Sorry but that’s just a copy of Crazy Rich 1 in another setting with a very foreseeable plot. Really don’t understand the good reviews.
