Great Beginner treat/kibble dispenser
5 out of 5 stars
Great Beginner treat/kibble dispenser
My 1 year 2month old Lab mix who is a crazy chewer absolutely loves this ball. I use my dogs food Kirkland adult dog food. The hole is very big and the kibble I use is nickel or dime size. Quite a bit spills out when it is full. But as more fall out it becomes more difficult. The first few days I watched her like a hawk following the advice of other reviewers . once she emptied it (always 2pieces of kibble left when she gives up) I immediately put it away and praised her for completing it. She has not tried to destroy it yet. I can only fit about 1 cup of kirkland kibble at a time. A few times she took it outside without me knowing and has not tried to puncture it. I do not know why she has not tried to destroy it. Maybe it is because when she originally tried to take it outside I let her know right away that I did not want it outside by yelling to her when I noticed her heading for the door with it in her mouth and if she managed to go outside with it I followed her out and retrieved it from her and only gave it back to her while she was in the house. I store it with her food and she whines as i am filling it. I tried putting electrical tape to make it more challenging but she knew it did not belong on there and took it right off. I may find a different way to decrease the hole size. I usually don't buy treats for my dogs. They get fruits, veggies, and meat as snacks. I might try some good organic dry treats that are bigger than her kibble. There is only 1 hole so I wouldn't suggest putting hotdogs or any wet or sticky food. It rinses off pretty easily with soap and water.1 week later and I am confident I can leave her alone with it and she will not attempt to destroy it. I have come home 4 times with it being outside in the back yard with no harm done. I also do not play with it with her. She can play fetch from sun up until sun down. I am very happy with this product and will buy it again if she should happen to kill it!

My dog is a three year old Scottie-Cairn-something mix who weighs 17 pounds and is a healthy lively intelligent little person! She has been enjoying her large (5") orange treat ball practically every day for all of her life. Before her, my Pembroke Welsh Corgi (about 27 pounds) played with the same treat ball for several years, a few times a week. I have been looking for a replacement for a long time. I'm sooooo happy to find this on Amazon!! The one I bought today will be my second and I'm considering a third but may have to wait for an extra large...

What I normally do with this treat ball is put a few highly scented, narrow, two-inch long treats inside that will remain for a long time because it's hard to get them oriented to fall back out. Those treats are the reason my dog will pick the ball up and roll it around, and will chase it down inside or out. Additionally, I like to put her dry dog food to the ball as needed. She eats small-sized kibble. Normal kibble fits, too, and takes longer to fall out. If she seems more agitated than usual, working on the ball will help my dog get that negativity out of her system. Some days she just wants to play more or have something challenging to do so the ball is a positive energy and mental outlet. Because she picks the ball up and drops it, rolls it all around the house, and chases it when it's tossed, she actually spends hours doing something she enjoys!

I've learned that I need to keep the treat ball away from my other dog who is a 45 pound Lab-Border Collie-Whippet-something mix unless she's just chasing it. For some reason, she doesn't want to roll the ball around but just wants to get at the treats by digging them out with her teeth as if it were a Kong. She made serious teeth marks in it and nearly ruined the tube that makes up the funnel-like awesomeness of this dog toy. To me, this ball is like an exaggerated golf ball minus so many dimples. There is a tube in one of the dimples that goes into the inside of the ball and leaves about one inch of clearance for treats to fall in and get "stuck" in the rest of the ball. The tube is attached to the ball by some glue or some rubber-on-rubber melting, and begins at a dimple/hole in the middle of the ball. It's also a flexible, thinner material than the exterior of the ball. A treat on the inside has to line up with the tube before it will come back out. That's a hard thing to accomplish without a lot of rolling, tossing, and dropping!!

Some dogs are problem solvers and will figure out the best way to get treats. Get this treat ball for those dogs. Other dogs are more direct and try to eat through the ball. Those other dogs should probably stick to Kongs
KONG Classic Kong Dog Toy, Large, Red  and Squirrels  Premier Squirrel Dude Dog Toy, Large ...

For dogs that have fun with this treat ball, the bigger the size in proportion to the dog, the better. I doubt the ball is really that large in comparison to the dog in the photo (an Airedale), but it should be. My dog is 17 pounds and finds the large 5" ball to be perhaps on the small size. She has no problem with picking it up to give it a good toss. She can even hop on the sofa or (oh no) the bed to drop it back to the floor. Hilarious to see! Perhaps I will post video... Because of temperament and proportion I only recommend the large 5" ball for a small dog of 10-25 pounds or so.

If you have a creature smaller than 10 pounds, the cat-size orange treat ball will work great for you. I call it cat-size because I am thinking of giving a food-filled ball to my young cats for supper one day. As long as my dogs can't steal the ball, I think the cats might enjoy it. I imagine a dog that's smaller than a cat would enjoy the small treat ball as well! No offense meant to people who have itty bitty canines! :)

The treat ball will need a good washing once in a while and this is a challenge. You'll have to get any treats out yourself if they'r stuck in there (as I believe is a good thing for some treats, like short strips of rawhide, to be). After scrubbing the outside with Dawn and filling the inside with lots of soapy water, it's a good idea to roll the ball around in a water + small amount of bleach. To dry the ball, set it out with the tube pointing up for several hours. Take a paper towel that is rolled so it's long and thin and do your best to dry the inside. The ball should be left alone for a long time so it will dry properly. I try to leave it a couple days to be safe.

If reading this review inspired you to buy an orange treat ball and you feel like rushing out to get one immediately, then you can find it at Petsmart (expect to pay $17 + tax). Something else you'd find at Petsmart that is sadly missing here on Amazon is a soccer ball version of this awesome dog toy. I got mine today! I paid $12 for it and saw it was more expensive online. Some places charge ridiculous shipping rates. That's one reason I love Amazon Prime! My new treat ball will be filled with goodies and making my little dog happy in just two days! I'll give the older one to my bigger dog. I wonder if she'll eventually work the tube/funnel off? I don't mind posting an update if anyone wants it.

So, to conclude for now... The reason I've given five stars is that of all dogs' toys in all pet stores and online, this ball (or any of the same design) is the one that continually and safely engages my active, intelligent, always-hungry little dog. I've been so happy with this ball I'd rate it with more than five stars if I could!

This has quickly become my dog's favorite toy, as well as mine! I bought it for Christmas but I was too excited to wait, and I'm so glad I gave it to him early. I wish I'd gotten it sooner!
So I have a 90 lb lab mix. He's not much of a chewer, but he loves playing ball, frisbee - anything interactive. I was concerned he wouldn't play with this ball by himself, that he would bring it to me and expect me to throw it. He didn't take long to get the hang of rolling it around though, which is wonderful because it gives me some uninterrupted time to eat myself! He also tends to devour his dish of food in like, thirty seconds, which can result in digestive discomfort, so I really appreciate that this toy encourages slower eating.
The ball holds about one cup of food at a time. Marco eats two cups at every feeding so I have to refill the ball when he finishes the first cup. It takes him about half an hour to empty the ball twice, and I won't let him play with it unsupervised, so I don't use it if I'm in a hurry to leave. The kibble does fall out a lot easier when the ball is full; once there are only a few pieces left they are difficult to get out. Marco usually gives up at that point.
The one thing that this toy cannot provide is raised feeding, which can be beneficial for large dogs. Prior to the ball, Marco ate out of a raised dish, which prevents the strain on their neck, spine, and hips that occurs when they bend down to eat. When I feed him using the ball, obviously he bends down to eat the kibble as it falls out. Sometimes I only use the ball for one cup of food and put the second cup in his raised dish.
This ball is perfect for entertaining energetic dogs and slowing down the speedy eater. I'd also like to think it might improve mental acuity too. As for some of the reviewers who say their dog chewed through the toy - it's not meant to be a chew toy. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty sturdy. But if your dog is a heavy chewer to begin with and you give him something with food in it, what do you think he's going to do? Of course it's always important to supervise your dog's play. If you see him chewing, take the ball away.

PRO:
- soft, lightweight material (can't hurt anyone's toes)
- quiet toy for dog owners who work from home
- indentations increase randomness of when the treats fall out
- rolls easily like a regular ball, forcing the dog to exercise more when chasing the ball in a large room
- great for energetic puppies

CON:
- not a chew toy!!! only dispenses treats. make sure to have chew toys nearby or else this toy will surely be destroyed and dangerous to the dog. remove this toy when ball is empty. do not leave the dog alone with this toy. dog must be supervised.
- treat opening is too wide. smaller treats fall out too easily. bigger treats increase the difficulty level

LONG STORY:
i has 3 dogs: 1 10lb senior poodle, 2 Cavapoo 10lb puppies. i have a ball for each of them and i also have to separate the senior dog from the puppies because they end up fighting for the balls. our kitchen and family room is one big room, which allows the dogs to chase the treat balls up and down the room multiple times. i use pieces of freeze-dried beef liver cubes into the treat balls everyday. i would use it all day long if i could! this has been such a lifesaver.

if you follow safety rules in regards to dog toys in general, then you will also get the most out of this treat ball.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guter Futterball mit einem Mangel
Reviewed in Germany on October 24, 2018

I saw Pluto (from Pluto living) using one of these and had to have one. My dog gets her dinner in it every night and it takes her 20 mins to eat. much better than 2 seconds!
she loves it. I am trying to teach her tricks with it, but she just uses her nose and pushes it around...
I bought a hard plastic one prior and it would only work on lawn, not on wooden floorboards. This is soft rubber/silicon so perfect for hard indoor surfaces!

Great little toy. We feed our puppy his lunch and dinner in it so that way it keeps him entertained for longer. We didn’t realize different sizes were available, so it is slightly bigger than we thought it would be - non the less our puppy still enjoys it a ton!
