In his New York Times bestselling book, Discipline Is Destiny, Ryan Holiday made the Stoic case for a life of self-discipline. In this much-anticipated third installment in the Stoic Virtues series, he argues for the necessity of doing what’s right – even when it isn’t easy

For the ancients, everything worth pursuing in life flowed from a strong sense of justice—or one’s commitment to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult. In order to be courageous, wise, and self-disciplined, one must begin with justice. The influence of the modern world often tells us that acting justly is optional. Holiday argues that that’s simply untrue—and the fact that so few people today have the strength to stand by their convictions explains much about why we’re so unhappy.

In
Right Thing. Right Now., Holiday draws on fascinating stories of historical figures such as Marcus Aurelius, Florence Nightingale, Jimmy Carter, Gandhi, and Frederick Douglass, whose examples of kindness, honesty, integrity, and loyalty we can emulate as pillars of upright living. Through the lives of these role models, readers learn the transformational power of living by a moral code and, through the cautionary tales of unjust leaders, the consequences of an ill-formed conscience.

The Stoics never claimed that living justly was easy, only that it was necessary. And that the alternative—sacrificing our principles for something lesser—was considered only by cowards and fools.
Right Thing. Right Now. is a powerful antidote to the moral failures of our modern age, and a manual for living virtuously.

Ryan Holiday's "Right Thing, Right Now: Good Values. Good Character. Good Deeds." is a masterful addition to The Stoic Virtues Series. As someone deeply interested in practical philosophy and personal development, I found this book both enlightening and actionable. Holiday seamlessly integrates ancient Stoic wisdom with modern-day challenges, offering a guide that is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. His clear, engaging writing style makes complex concepts accessible, and the real-life examples he provides help illustrate how these timeless principles can be applied to everyday situations. The book’s emphasis on doing the right thing in the moment, cultivating good character, and committing to good deeds resonates deeply and provides a blueprint for living a more virtuous life.

What sets this book apart is its practical approach. Holiday doesn't just theorize about Stoic virtues; he provides concrete steps and exercises to help readers incorporate these values into their lives. Each chapter ends with actionable advice that encourages reflection and growth, making it an invaluable resource for anyone looking to improve their character and decision-making. The book's structure is well-organized, making it easy to digest and refer back to key points. Whether you're new to Stoicism or a seasoned practitioner, "Right Thing, Right Now" offers profound insights and practical tools to help you navigate life's challenges with integrity and purpose. This book is a must-read for anyone committed to personal development and ethical living.

Great book with insightful thoughts and encouragement. Nice short chapters, but with plenty to consider. Should be required reading for everyone in our current government, or running for a political position. It was convicting on some accounts but not guilt trip. An encouragement to do better.

I am a big fan of Ryan Holiday and this book is one of his best. It is not a fast read. In fact, I sometimes read the same pages over and over again, day to day, because the material is so 'deep'. There are many lessons to be learned on every page. It is well worth the purchase.

Great book on justice. It's about how doing the right thing, IS the right thing. The chapters are short and to the point. The points are very simple, mostly based on high morals, integrity, and being selfless. Ryan does a great job explaining his points and motivating you to be a better person.

The first fee chapters felt like a rehash of Ryan’s book, but it got interesting towards the middle, however it soon lagged again before finishing strong with the afterword. As a long fan of his work, i am a bit disappointed. I was expecting a little more gray than black and white

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the most Glamourous of the stoic virtues series, but perhaps the most important!!
Reviewed in Canada on August 9, 2024
Great read as usual with all of Ryans books! I particularly loved courage is calling (as courage is perhaps one of the more glamorous virtues) and felt it highlighted the potential or capability of the human spirit. The reaction was almost the opposite reading Right thing, Right Now, as the book constantly held up a mirror to the own injustices I see within myself and my own life. Called out. That's a great way to describe it. Reading this book with openness is pivotal for it to land. For me it was recognizing I was not as just of a person as I had previously thought (I have work to do).

2.0 out of 5 stars Very politicized
Reviewed in Poland on July 24, 2024
As a long time fan of Ryan Holiday, having all his books from the Stoic virtues series, this one was my first let down. The author gets increasingly political and pushes agendas such as accepting all refugees/migrants from Africa/Middle East, even though he's American and it's fair to say that he doesn't have to live with this problem on everyday basis, unlike us, Europeans. It's easy to say 'just take them all' and feel morally superior while sitting on the other side of Atlantic. Another thing the author is supporting is Israel and its political history. I will leave this for everyone's individual consideration. The views on these extremely difficult matters are very simplified.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, not as good as previous books from the author.
Reviewed in Germany on July 17, 2024
This book is dedicated to Justice, it's very well sctructred with short chapters. Most of the stories about very well known people are interesting, I have learned something new. On some topics I have disagreed with the author as I think he adopted "woke" viewpoints. Funnily he even mentioned it himself, and didn't care, which is a fair point. Nevertheless, if you are interested in some stoic stories you'll like the book.
