Return to the bestselling Beach House series with Mary Alice Monroe’s tale of the struggles and triumphs of the historic Rutledge family of South Carolina. “Authentic, generous, and heartfelt” (Mary Kay Andrews, New York Times bestselling author), this is an illuminating story of new beginnings, resilience, and one family’s enduring love.

Cara Rutledge returns to her Southern home on the idyllic Isle of Palms. Comforting in its familiarity, it is still rife with painful memories. Only through reconnecting with family, friends, and the rhythms of the lowcountry can Cara release the hold of the past and open herself to the possibility of a new career and love.

Meanwhile, her niece Linnea, a recent college graduate with an uncertain future, leaves her historic home in Charleston, with all its entitlement and expectations, and heads to her aunt’s beach house. On the island, she is free to join the turtle team, learn to surf, and fall in love. Remembering the lessons of her beloved grandmother, Lovie, the original “turtle lady,” Linnea rediscovers a meaningful purpose to her life and finds the courage she needs to break from tradition.

In “this tender and openhearted novel of familial expectations, new boundaries, and the power of forgiveness” (
Booklist), three generations of the Rutledge family gather together to find the strength, love, and commitment to break destructive family patterns and to forge new bonds that will endure long beyond one summer reunion.

Mary Alice Monroe takes you to the low country

This last book in The Beach House series takes you back to the low country and reunites the reader with all their beloved characters. With the descriptive talent of the author I could almost smell the ocean and feel the warm sand between my toes. The Beach House Reunion was a bitter sweet ending to a series that feels like home.

I discovered Mary Alice Monroe’s books last summer, in the midst of the pandemic, and they have been a refuge for me during this wild time. A place where my heart and spirit finds home, peace, and a sense of belonging.

I have loved every single one of Mary Alice Monroe’s books I have read and am so thankful she’s so prolific in her writing! Additionally, being in the process of writing my own first novel, I’ve learned so much about the art of writing and spinning a world the reader will want to spend time in through reading her books. I can only hope my writing can, one day, touch my readers’ hearts the way Mary Alice Monroe’s has touched mine.

I can’t ever thank you enough for your stories, Mary Alice Monroe! My mom and friends I’ve recommended your books to have all loved them, as well!

The beach house is alive again! Cara Rutledge has come home to the Isle of Palms and Primrose Cottage to restart her life. At 53, she has adopted Hope, who is only a year old. She needs to build her career and find a way to lessen her grief from the loss of her husband, Brett. Since three years have gone by, she knows she needs to move on with life. Cara is flooded with memories as she settles in, especially of her mother, Lovie. A hint of jasmine is in the air. To help her with Hope, Cara hires Linnea, her brother Palmer’s daughter, to live with her for the summer. As the story unfolds, she finds that her brother Palmer’s family is in need. The tensions between Palmer, his wife Julia, and their young adult children, Linnea (22) and Cooper (18) are like a tropical storm building towards a hurricane. Linnea feels fortunate for being able to get away from all the turmoil. This multigenerational story deals with new beginnings, family struggles, love, and the beauty of the sea and its surroundings. Mary Alice Monroe’s vivid descriptions awakened my senses throughout this book. I saw the light from the moon reflecting on the water. I visualized the colors of the sunrises and sunsets. And the dolphins and loggerheads filled me with the awe that they deserve. Previous characters are brought back, and I especially squealed with delight when Toy, who is working with her beloved loggerheads at the aquarium, is a part of the story. The development of new loves from friendship is wonderful. I was drawn into the story from the first page to the last. I laughed like the dolphins, cried for the female loggerheads, and relished every moment. [I received a complimentary copy.]

Mary Alice Monroe never disappoints when I want something familiar. This book takes us back to the Isle of Palms and Charleston. Two Rutledge women are back with very different decisions to make about their futures. Cara Rutledge has made a life altering change and needs to be near family and friends for support. Her niece Linnea has graduated from college and needs the inner strength to do what is best for her life and career in spite of traditions that are being forced upon her. Neither knows a better place to think than Primrose Cottage, the beach home Cara inherited from her mother.

Each chapter begins with a fact about the endangered loggerhead turtles that nest on the Isle of Palms.

I hesitate to call this light because it covers some very serious topics, but it is a great weekend read that emphasizes the importance of family, friends, memories, and healing. It is largely predictable and perfectly comfortable.

Family reunions can run the emotional gamut from euphoria (reconnecting with friends and family) to melancholy (deeply missing loved ones who are no longer living), and Mary Alice Monroe's latest novel in the Beach House series doesn't disappoint her avid readers. From the very day Cara Rutledge returns to Primrose Cottage with the newest member of her family until the final gut-wrenching reconciliation and rehabilitation of her brother Palmer with her nephew Cooper, Beach House Reunion transports the reader back to the Isle of Palms as Cara builds a new life for herself after the untimely, tragic death of her beloved Brett. Along the way, she welcomes the comfort of Lovie's cottage, now hers, and reestablishes her relationships with her neighbors, fellow Turtle Team Ladies, as she develops new relationships with her niece Linnea and a new man in her life. Along this journey, Cara revisits dear friends Flo and Emmi, Heather and Bo, Toy and Ethan, as she takes a leap of faith with a very special one.

As always, Loggerhead turtles play an important role in this Beach House novel, and Big Girl makes an unexpected return to the Isle of Palms, too. Cara's life parallels Big Girl's in a striking way: "This girl's been through some tough times, taken a few knocks, but she's moving forward, as steady and relentless as a tank. She's going all the way home."

I read the first book, the second book and fell in love so I went to Charleston to see for myself. I visited the hospital and was totally lucky to be invited to the beach one early morning to see a turtle release--all of those babies scurrying across the sand. It was a moment I will not likely ever forget. Every year I look forward to the new book and this year was just as great as always. Imagine my surprise when the book mentioned Barb with her camera , and that was the Barb ( I checked in the acknowledgements) that I wrote to and who introduced me at the Hospital. She also invited me to that Beach -- and so it was the first time someone I knew was part of a book-! how cool is that? I sent a small donation every year which can never be equal to the pleasure I have had from this experience. I loved this book the most because of it touching me personally with Barb and then the new hospital which I likely bought one nail for!! fantastic and I thank you Mary Alice Monroe for the wonderful reading days you have given me through the years.

I was thrilled that there was another Beach House story as I desperately wanted to find out what happened to the characters that I loved.
Finishing any of Mary Alice Monroe’s books leaves me with a feeling of having lost my best friend so I am always excited to discover another of her books.
I am always immediately drawn into the location and can feel that I am there in the beach with the Turtle Ladies doing their utmost to save these beautiful creatures.
I am now awaiting the next book so no pressure Mary. I have also got a few friends hooked on the Beach House series.

I chose this book for the setting as I am familiar with it. It is a nice story but slow moving and not compelling in the "what is going to happen next" way. A good easy beach read.

I found this book to be enjoyable, and the development of the characters was interesting. However, I was disappointed that the storyline was predictable and lacked any real twists, turns, or surprising events. Because of this, I’m giving it a 3-star rating.
