A Good Morning America Book Club Pick and a New York Times bestseller!

“A page-turner for booklovers everywhere! . . . A story of family ties, their lost dreams, and the redemption that comes from discovering truth.”—Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of The Shoemaker's Wife

In
New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis's latest historical novel, a series of book thefts roils the iconic New York Public Library, leaving two generations of strong-willed women to pick up the pieces.

It's 1913, and on the surface, Laura Lyons couldn't ask for more out of life—her husband is the superintendent of the New York Public Library, allowing their family to live in an apartment within the grand building, and they are blessed with two children. But headstrong, passionate Laura wants more, and when she takes a leap of faith and applies to the Columbia Journalism School, her world is cracked wide open. As her studies take her all over the city, she is drawn to Greenwich Village's new bohemia, where she discovers the Heterodoxy Club—a radical, all-female group in which women are encouraged to loudly share their opinions on suffrage, birth control, and women's rights. Soon, Laura finds herself questioning her traditional role as wife and mother. And when valuable books are stolen back at the library, threatening the home and institution she loves, she's forced to confront her shifting priorities head on . . . and may just lose everything in the process.

Eighty years later, in 1993, Sadie Donovan struggles with the legacy of her grandmother, the famous essayist Laura Lyons, especially after she's wrangled her dream job as a curator at the New York Public Library. But the job quickly becomes a nightmare when rare manuscripts, notes, and books for the exhibit Sadie's running begin disappearing from the library's famous Berg Collection. Determined to save both the exhibit and her career, the typically risk-averse Sadie teams up with a private security expert to uncover the culprit. However, things unexpectedly become personal when the investigation leads Sadie to some unwelcome truths about her own family heritage—truths that shed new light on the biggest tragedy in the library's history.

Praise for The Lions of Fifth Avenue

“Davis delves into the history of the New York Public Library in this delightful mystery. . . . The characters and story are stellar, but the real star of the show is the library, which Davis evokes beautifully.”

Combining so many subjects that are important to me, including rare books and journalism, this novel transported me back in time to a period I knew little about while weaving a fascinating who-done-it stretching into the modern day. Fun read!

The Lions of Fifth Avenue takes place during 2 different time periods, 1913/14 and 1993, at the New York Public Library and with the Lyons Family - Laura and Jack Lyons with their 2 children Harry and Pearl. Jack’s job is superintendent of the library which comes with its perks - living in the mezzanine apartment found in the New York Public Library. While Jack had his dreams of writing a best seller … Laura has her own dreams; she wanted to be more than a mother and wife, she wanted her own career and to make a difference in the world. Getting accepted into the Columbia Journalism School was her first achievement. When on assignment Laura runs into an old collage friend (Dr.) Amelia Potter who invites her to Heterodoxy Club.

“It’s a luncheon club held in Greenwich Village every other Saturday, for women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds. You might enjoy it.” She pulled out a card from her satchel and scribbled an address, date, and time on the back. “Do come.”

Between School, getting involved with the Heterodoxy Club and developing a romantic interest with Amelia which resulted in some serious conflicts between Laura and Jack, add in the mysterious thefts of several rare books the Lyons are in for some troubled times.

In 1993 we meet Sadie Donahue granddaughter to Laura Lyons, she works at the New York Library as the temporary curator and is preparing for as big exhibit called Evergreen from the Berg Collection and then similar mysterious thefts of rare books are taking place again and she is a suspect.

The main story line of the The Lions of Fifth Avenue revolves around the mystery surround these stolen rare novels, how it affects both these families.

I found the first ½ of this novel rather slow and dull, it really wasn’t until we get into the story of who done it, the bookstore stings and a little love interest did I felt the author started to engage me in the story. I did feel that Ms. Davis does a great job in delving into the history of the New York Public Library and feel this is one the real star of this story. My 3 Star rating is being generous

I enjoyed the storyline and characters. The author does a good job of connecting characters between time periods and tying up loose ends. However, the characters and the conclusion could have been more thoroughly developed. The relationship between Laura and Amelia needed a bit more development to understand why Laura would be willing to sacrifice everything. Also, Jack's behavior toward his wife near the end of his story was too unexpected. Also the conclusion did tie up loose ends, it was a bit rushed.

In Fiona Davis's novel, "The Lions of Fifth Avenue," a grandmother and granddaughter who never met each other are connected to the magnificent branch of the New York Public Library on Fifth Street. Laura Lyons, the grandmother, actually lived in an apartment on the mezzanine of the library with her husband, the library's superintendent, and her two children, beginning in 1913. Eighty years later, granddaughter Sadie Donovan works in the library section that houses rare books and artifacts.

Laura Lyons had it all - the perfect stereotypical package that was supposed to be an American woman's best destiny in the early 20th Century. But despite her marriage to a good-looking man and being the mother of two children, Laura wanted more. She dreamed of becoming a reporter, so she enrolled, over her husband's objections, in the Journalism School at Columbia University. As one of only a few female journalism students, she was subjected to the indignities of discrimination by her journalism professor. However, during her year at Columbia, Laura met a cadre of feminist thinkers who awakened in her a thirst for living outside of the box of traditional female roles. Meanwhile, while working his full-time job at the library, her husband is struggling to complete a book that he thinks will make the family rich. Unfortunately, priceless original editions of books begin to go missing from the secured stacks. A chain of events leads to tragedy for Laura and her family.

By 1993, when we meet Sadie Donovan, she is named interim department head when her boss unexpectedly takes another position out of state. Sadie is recently divorced, but enjoys spending time with her brother's family. She is thrilled to be placed in charge of an upcoming exhibit of the library's collection of valuable books and relics. But history begins to repeat itself. Some of the most priceless books disappear. This reflects poorly on Sadie, who is originally unaware that her grandfather had once been in charge of precious volumes that disappeared. Worse yet, she has never revealed to anyone at the library that she was related to her grandmother, Laura Lyons, now a deceased but renowned essayist, who once lived at the library. As the investigation into the missing items heats up, this secret will not play well when exposed.

So as to avoid spoilers, suffice it to say that the past and present are inexorably intertwined in this marvelous novel. Fiona Davis alternates the storytelling from 1913 to 1993 throughout the book, divulging information about Laura, Sadie, and the thefts at a tantalizingly slow (but not boring) pace. I wanted to know more and read late into the night.

Just finished The Lions of Fifth Avenue. Had heard a lot about it but it was the @bakingbookworm review that clinched it for me.

This is a beautiful story of two women, Laura and Sadie, decades apart whose lives and those of the ones they love are centred on the goings on at the New York Public Library. Both women, particularly Laura, chafe against the societal restrictions placed upon them as women in the home and workplace. Both stories are interesting, especially Laura’s, and the descriptions of the library are gorgeous. The two time periods work very effectively and show the consequences that decisions can have decades later. It is also fascinating to see how the role of women has slowly evolved since the early 1900s to the 1990s.

If you love books, libraries, and well-depicted female characters, this book is for you. Beautifully done.
