What are the General Records Schedules (GRS)

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) issues General Records Schedules (GRS) that provide disposition authority for common federal records. This way agencies do not have to request disposition themselves. NARA expects agencies to use the GRS except in limited circumstances.

The GRS covers records documenting administrative or support functions. They typically do not cover records documenting the mission of an agency.

Use of the GRS is mandatory. Agencies must use the GRS unless they can justify the use of an agency-specific schedule. For more information see Requesting a Deviation from a Current GRS Item.

NARA issues new and revised GRS through GRS Transmittals. If your agency wants to continue using your existing disposition item, you must submit a GRS Notification. For more information see Submitting a GRS Notification to Use an Existing Agency-Specific Authority.
