Reg Holbrook: 'The tannoy announced, "The German war has ended"'

Reg Holbrook was born in 1919 and when war broke out he joined the Home Guard because there were concerns that Britain could be invaded.

He was married but when his marriage failed he wrote to the Navy asking to be called up even though he was in a reserved occupation making Spitfire wings.

Within three days he was sent a rail warrant with instructions to head to Chatham Naval Dockyard.

Before long he found himself in the Fleet Air Arm and on a ship heading to a mystery destination.

After weeks at sea he arrived in Australia and was subsequently deployed in the Pacific.

Reg Holbrook RN passed away on Friday 14 July 2023 after a short illness.
