While there wasn’t a ton of shake-up in the overall standings after Stage 11, Wednesday’s stage proved to be a major day for the general classification. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) took the stage win, narrowly defeating Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Pogačar’s early attack netted him some bonus seconds over the biggest climb of the day, but Vingegaard took back some of that time on the finish. All told, Vingegaard gained just one second on Pogačar, but the stage is set for an epic final week and a half.

Pogačar remains in the yellow leader’s jersey. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) remains in second, though he did lose some time to Pogačar—he is back 1:06. Vingegaard is still in third, 1:14 behind. Primož Roglič (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) is in fourth, 2:15 back. João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) is now in fifth, 4:20 behind.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) remains in the yellow jersey as the leader of the 2024 Tour de France after Stage 9. There was no change to the general classification standings despite plenty of craziness of the white gravel roads in and around Troyes.

While the standings remained the same, it wasn’t without any chaos. Pogačar launched a number of attacks, and Remco Evenepoel even went on the offensive at one point. Primož Roglič was caught between in the earlier parts of the stage, and Jonas Vingegaard spent a good deal of the day on his teammate’s bike. But ultimately, there was no change in the GC standings among the yellow jersey favorites. And now it’s time for a much-needed rest day.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) took back the yellow jersey on Stage 4. Pogačar wore the yellow race leader’s jersey on Stage 3, but lost it to Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) for Stage 4. On a difficult Stage 4 climb that included a trip up the Col du Galibier, Pogačar won the stage and took over the lead in the general classification.

The top four entered the day with the same time, but Pogačar put some distance on him and the rest of the contenders on Stage 4. Pogačar attacked up the Galibier and kept the hammer down on the ensuing descent. He now leads the GC by 45 seconds over Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step). In third place overall is the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), down 50 seconds of Pogačar. Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) grabbed the yellow jersey on Stage 3 despite not gaining any true time over his rivals atop the general classification standings. That’s because if you count the total places from the first three stages, Carapaz has the best overall place out of the four with the same time. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) falls back to second place overall, but—again—did not lose any time on the day.

Romain Bardet of France won Stage 1 of the Tour de France and is the current leader of the 2024 Tour de France. The 33-year-old Bardet—racing in his final Tour de France—takes the yellow jersey for the first time in his career. He rode his first Tour in 2013. Bardet and his Team dsm–firmenich PostNL teammate Frank van den Broek held off a hard-charging peloton to go 1-2 on the stage by five seconds with Bardet earning the Stage 1 and thus taking the overall lead in the General Classification. He will wear the yellow jersey on Sunday’s Stage 2. Bardet also earned 10 bonus seconds for winning the stage. Van den Broek grabbed six bonus seconds and third place finisher Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) got four.

Despite a very difficult and hot day in the saddle, all the favorites of the Tour de France made it to the finish without losing any time. Tadej Pogačar (Team UAE Emirates), the odds-on favorite to win the Tour, finished fourth on the stage and just missed out on some bonus seconds allotted to the top three finishers in the stage. There were plenty of questions about the fitness of Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), but he looked strong on Stage 1 and finished with the peloton.
