The final day of the MLB Draft provided good news for a few locals.

Former Shrewsbury ace and Boston College Friday night starter John West was drafted in the 12th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday afternoon. Along with West, BC High alum and North Carolina left-hander Shea Sprague went in the 13th round to the Boston Red Sox.

West starred at Shrewsbury where he led the Colonials to a district final in 2019. At Boston College, West was a prominent arm in the weekend rotation. As a junior, West went 5-3 with a 4.50 ERA and then this last year he struck out 66 in 78 innings.

Sprague meanwhile was a key piece in a BC High rotation for three seasons. He helped lead the Eagles to a Super Eight appearance in 2019. After two years at Elon, Sprague transferred to North Carolina for this past season where he transitioned into a weekend arm.

The southpaw was often a Saturday starter for a North Carolina rotation that led its team to the College World Series. Sprague finished the season with a 3-2 record to go with a 4.25 ERA. He is most known for his changeup.

Along with West and Sprague, Jonathan Santucci, Jack Penney, and Dennis Colleran had their names called over the three days marking five Massachusetts natives to be selected in this years draft.
