Player Outlook
Despite only recording two of the Angels' first seven saves, Carlos Estevez went on to convert a career-best 31 of the team's 43 total saves for a 72.1% team share that was ninth-highest among relievers. The hard-throwing right-hander quickly put a disastrous spring behind him to record a 1.50 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over the first two months of the season. He maintained solid ratios through the end of July, even earning his first All-Star selection, but he posted abhorrent numbers over the final two months to finish the year with a disappointing 3.90 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. The 31-year-old produced a career-best 27.8% strikeout rate thanks to his upper-90's fastball, but he also struggled with his command and control, as his 11% walk rate was his worst since his rookie season. Estevez is a wild card for fantasy purposes since he's in the final year of his contract with the Angels. He may open 2024 as LA's closer, but performance risk and/or a possible trade do not inspire much confidence.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Up to 24 saves

Estevez earned the save in Wednesday's 4-2 win over Toronto. He issued one walk while striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth inning. It's the sixth straight scoreless appearance for Estevez, who's allowed just two hits while striking out six in that span (seven innings). Estevez's ERA is down to a pristine 2.17 with a 0.79 WHIP and 48:9 K:BB across 49.2 innings between the Phillies and Angels this season. He's converted 24 of 28 save chances.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Grabs save Saturday

Estevez allowed a hit and struck out two over a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 3-0 win over Atlanta. Estevez didn't receive Philadelphia's last save chance, which went to Jeff Hoffman on Thursday. Hoffman handled the eighth inning Saturday against the top of Atlanta's lineup while Estevez worked through the heart of the lineup in the ninth. Estevez has allowed five runs (three earned) over 12.2 innings while earning three saves across 12 appearances since he was traded from the Angels. He now has a 2.31 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 44:8 K:BB with 23 saves in 27 chances this year. Manager Rob Thomson looks to be sticking with a committee approach to closing, with Estevez, Hoffman and Jose Alvarado all in the mix for high-leverage spots.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Secures save Wednesday

Estevez allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Atlanta. Estevez is up to 22 saves on the year, but he's earned just two of them since he was traded from the Angels to the Phillies. He's added a 2.47 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB through 43.2 innings this season. Estevez appears to have the edge over Jeff Hoffman and Jose Alvarado for save chances, as neither of those relievers has logged a save in August, though Philadelphia hasn't generated many opportunities this month.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Records first save with Philly

Estevez picked up the save over the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits over one inning while striking out two. Estevez entered the game with a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning and surrendered a leadoff single to Geraldo Perdomo before fanning the next two batters. The recently acquired reliever would then cough up an RBI single to Jake McCarthy, but Estevez went on to retire the final batter for his 22nd save of the season and his first in a Phillies uniform. It marked the first earned run charged to Estevez since May 20 when he was still an Angel, and he's recorded at least one strikeout in each of his last four appearances.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Takes fourth loss

Estevez (1-4) was charged with the loss in an extra-inning battle against the Mariners on Saturday, allowing one run on two walks over 1.2 innings while also hitting a batter with a pitch. He struck out two. Estevez entered the game with the score tied in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side on 12 pitches before being brought back out for the 10th. The right-hander then proceeded to intentionally walk Cal Raleigh to open the frame before recording outs in the next two at-bats. However, things fell apart for Estevez after he hit Dylan Moore in the following at-bat, then walked Mitch Haniger to send home the winning run for Seattle. The two walks on the night marked a season high for the reliever, while the run that came home, albeit unearned, was the first that scored on his watch since May 21 against the Astros.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Open to any role

Estevez, when asked Monday what his role with the Phillies would be, responded, "I'm down for whatever, man," Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Estevez was acquired in a trade with the Angels on Saturday, with pitching prospects George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri going the other way. Estevez saved 20 games and produced a 2.38 ERA and 0.74 WHIP prior to the move, but his new manager Rob Thomson typically preferred a committee approach. Estevez may well be ahead of both Jose Alvarado (13 saves) and Jeff Hoffman (nine saves) on the closer depth chart, but his share of the ninth inning will likely be smaller than it was in Los Angeles.

  • Phillies' Carlos Estevez: Traded to Philadelphia

The Angels traded Estevez to the Phillies on Saturday in exchange for right-hander George Klassen and left-hander Samuel Aldegheri. Estevez was one of the top closers available at the deadline, having logged 20 saves in 23 chances this season with a 2.38 ERA and 0.74 WHIP. He'll join a Phillies bullpen that opened the season deploying Jose Alvarado in the ninth inning before turning to Jeff Hoffman late in June, with Alvarado occasionally mixing in. Without a clear top closer, Estevez has a chance to step into the ninth-inning role for the Phillies, who boast an MLB-best 64-39 record.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches 20th save

Estevez pitched a perfect inning against the Mariners on Wednesday to earn a save. Estevez needed just nine pitches to set the Mariners down in order and preserve a 2-1 victory. The right-hander continued his run of dominance, as he's now held the opponent without an earned run in 19 straight appearances covering 18.1 innings. Over that span, Estevez has gone 13-for-13 in save chances and has posted a minuscule 0.38 WHIP.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Locks down another save

Estevez picked up his 18th save of the season in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Athletics, tossing a scoreless ninth inning while allowing a walk. Estevez made things interesting by issuing a leadoff walk to Lawrence Butler but went on to retire the next three batters in order to shut the door. He's now converted each of his last 12 saves and hasn't given up an earned run since May 20, a span of 18 appearances. Estevez's name has been swirling in trade talks, and if he is dealt at the deadline there's no guarantee he'd still be the closer for his new team. The 31-year-old owns a 2.53 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 31:5 K:BB in 32 innings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Secures 16th save

Estevez threw a perfect ninth inning to earn a save over Detroit on Friday. Estevez needed only nine pitches to sit down the heart of the Tigers' lineup in order. He's up to 16 saves on the year and has converted 10 straight chances. Since blowing his last save May 10, Estevez has given up just one earned run over 14.1 innings. He's lowered his season ERA to 3.12 with an impressive 27:3 K:BB through 26 appearances.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Snares 15th save

Estevez picked up the save Tuesday against Oakland, allowing one hit with two strikeouts across a scoreless ninth inning. Estevez's streak of eight consecutive perfect innings came to an end Tuesday. However, he converted on his ninth straight save attempt and hasn't allowed an earned run since May 20. While saves have come at a premium for an Angels team that rests 12 games below .500, Estevez has made the most of his opportunity and is on pace for career lows in ERA and WHIP.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Earns 12th save

Estevez struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in a 4-3 win over the Giants on Saturday. Called upon in the ninth inning for the second night in a row, Estevez needed just 12 pitches to secure his 12th save of the season. Estevez has not allowed a baserunner in five June appearances and has now converted six consecutive save opportunities dating back to May 20. On the season, Estevez is 12-for-15 in save chances with a 3.68 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 22:3 K:BB in 22 innings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Collects 11th save

Estevez struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 8-6 win over the Giants. The Giants rallied late, but Estevez shut the door with a 17-pitch ninth inning. He's up to 11 saves this season, five of which have come over his last seven appearances. The closer has added a 3.86 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 20:3 K:BB and three blown saves through 21 innings. The Angels don't often have leads to protect, but Estevez should continue to close as long as he's with the team -- though as a pending free agent, he will be a trade target over the next six weeks.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Picks up win Sunday

Estevez (1-3) got the win over the Astros on Sunday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning and striking out a batter in the process. Estevez was tasked with preserving a tie game, and did so without any trouble, sending the Astros hitters down in order on 12 pitches. He wound up as the winning pitcher after the Angels walked it off in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a two-run homer from Logan O'Hoppe. Estevez now has four consecutive scoreless appearances during which he's compiled three saves and a win. For the year, the 31-year-old has 10 saves to go with a 4.05 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB in 20 innings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Allows run but converts save

Estevez allowed a run on two hits and a walk without striking out a batter over one inning, earning the save in Monday's 9-7 win over the Astros. Estevez's last two outings came in non-save situations after he blew a save May 10 versus the Royals. The closer is now 7-for-10 in save chances this season, though there are some warning signs reemerging after he struggled late in 2023. He's now at a 5.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB through 15.2 innings this season. As long as the walk rate stays down, Estevez should be able to right the ship, but he's allowed multiple baserunners in six of his last 10 outings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Blows save, takes loss

Estevez (0-2) blew the save and took the loss Friday against Kansas City. He allowed two runs on three hits and no walks with one strikeout over one inning. Estevez allowed a lead-taking, two-run homer to Adam Frazier in the ninth inning to blow his third save on the year. Remarkably, the Angels closer has yet to issue a free pass this season after posting a shaky 11.0 percent walk rate in 2023, but he has allowed three homers over 11.2 innings, leading to a 6.17 ERA. Despite the ugly ERA, Estevez's hold on the ninth-inning role seems to be fairly secure thanks in large part to a career-high 30.4 percent strikeout rate.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Locks up save No. 4

Estevez struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save in a 7-4 win over the Orioles on Tuesday. Estevez struck out Jackson Holliday and Adley Rutschman while getting Gunnar Henderson to ground out to retire the side in order. Tuesday was his first appearance in a week since blowing a save against the Rays. Outside of that outing, Estevez has been very reliable as the team's closer and doesn't face much competition for the job with Robert Stephenson (elbow) out for the year and Jose Soriano in the rotation. He now has four saves to go along with a 2.57 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 7:0 K:BB in seven innings thus far.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: First blown save of 2024

Estevez gave up two runs on three hits in the ninth inning Tuesday to blow his first save of the season in a 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Rays. He struck out one. Called upon to protect a 3-1 lead, Estevez got two quick outs before the wheels fell off, with a Jose Caballero triple tying up the game. The Angels then had multiple other chances to put the game away before eventually falling in 13 innings. The runs were the first Estevez has allowed this season, and he's gone 3-for-4 in converting save chances with a 5:0 K:BB over six innings.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches first save

Estevez picked up the save Sunday against the Orioles. He pitched a clean inning with no strikeouts. Estevez calmly retired all three Orioles batters he faced Sunday to earn his first save of the season and 57th of his career. The 31-year-old reliever entered 2024 on the hot seat following the Angels' signing of Robert Stephenson over the winter. However, with Stephenson (shoulder) slated to be out until late April, Estevez should have no issue being the main saves target in the team's bullpen for now.

  • Angels' Carlos Estevez: Strikes out two for 31st save

Estevez picked up the save in Saturday's 1-0 win over Minnesota, striking out two over one inning while not allowing any hits or walks. He also hit a batter with a pitch. Estevez entered the game with a one-run lead in the ninth and hit Kyle Farmer with a pitch in the opening at-bat before getting the next two batters to go down swinging. The right-handed reliever was then able to retire Christian Vazquez on a flyout to secure his 31st save of the season, marking the first time in his last four appearances that he didn't allow any hits or walks. Estevez has converted two of his last three save opportunities and has not given up a home run since Aug. 3.
