GIRLS` BASKETBALL Since Maine South was first invited to the eight-team York tournament three years ago, coach Mike Deines has dreamed of playing and defeating the Dukes in the championship game. Saturday, Maine South (16-1) beat York 54-43 to fulfill that dream. South lost to York in the third-place game last season. ”The only teams that have beaten York in this tournament have either won the state championship or made the Elite Eight,” Deines said. ”We hope that`s a good sign. This is a quality field.” In the seven years of the tournament, Elk Grove defeated York on its way to the 1979 Class AA championship, and Richards reached the state tournament quarterfinals last season after it defeated the Dukes last season. . . . Lake Zurich bounced back from a 68-64 overtime loss to York in the semifinals to beat Sterling 65-57 for third place. Lake Zurich had to play its tournament opener Thursday without high-scoring Lisa Foss, who was out with the flu. She made up for lost time Saturday by scoring a tournament record 86 points in two games. . . . Lincoln-Way, Illiana Christian, Hinsdale South and Evergreen Park have drawn the top four seeds in the 10th annual 32-team Rich South Galaxy Tournament. It begins Saturday at eight sites. ”This is a big project but I like doing it,” said Rich South coach Pete Godfrey. ”It`s fun seeing so many teams from all over play.” After first- and second-round games Saturday, the tournament will continue with quarterfinal and semifinal play Feb. 15 at Rich South and Evergreen Park. The consolation championship, third-place game and championship game will be played Feb. 15, beginning at 5 p.m. The tournament is making its last February appearance. Beginning in 1987, the Illinois High School Association will move the regional tournament from March to February. The Galaxy will move to Jan. 10, 17 and 19.

SWIMMING

It`s February, and that means it`s time to focus on the state meet. The sectionals are Feb. 15. The winners in each event at the sectionals and those who equal or better the qualifying standards advance to the state finals Feb. 21-22 at Hinsdale South. Defending state champion St. Charles won`t have any trouble advancing most of its swimmers from the Waubonsie Valley sectional. Each of the 15 sectionals have a few strong teams: Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South at Hinsdale Central; Brother Rice at Sandburg; Fenwick and Evanston at Evanston; Stevenson at Barrington; Naperville North and Naperville Central at Naperville North; Loyola, Glenbrook North and New Trier at New Trier; and Schaumburg and Fremd at Palatine. . . . Hinsdale South, winner of the Naperville Central Invitational Jan. 25, won the Des Plaines Valley League title Saturday. Hinsdale South, ranked third in the ”Swimming in Illinois”

poll, won every event except the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 breaststroke. Mike Hemenway, Bob Allen, Chris Lapsey and Rich Evertz set a meet record in the 200 medley relay of 1:41.38. Lapsey set another record in the 200 individual medley (2:02.62) and Hemenway set one in the 100 backstroke (56.3). . . . Naperville North`s Fabio Minervini, Sean Brock and Mark Townsend each had a hand in three first places Saturday in the Fox Valley Invitational, won by Naperville North. Minervini won the individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and swam on the winning medley relay. Brock won the 50 freestyle and swam on both winning relays. Townsend won the 100 backstroke and swam on both relays. WRESTLING

Lyons Township ended its regular season in style Saturday by winning the Oak Park Invitational. The Lyons scored 189 1/2-180 1/2 over Oak Park. ”We won all four of our invitationals. The kids are pretty happy about that,”

said Lyons coach Mark King. ”I`m really happy. I think we did about as well as we could this year.” Lyons got championships from Ray Serbick (119 pounds) and Travis Tuomey (132). LT was 17-4 in duals this season, with losses to No. 1 Proviso East, No. 5 Marist, No. 4 Naperville North and De Kalb. King can speak with authority about three of the top five teams in The Tribune midseason coaches` poll. ”The top five teams are in a league by themselves,” said King, whose team didn`t wrestle No. 2 Joliet Central or No. 3 Leyden. . . . Bloom is about ready to explode. The Trojans were highly rated at the start of the season but have been hampered by injuries. Saturday at Oak Park, they got titles from Curtis Crims (24-1) at 126, Kevin Walker (9-1) at 145, Charles Stephenson (19-4-2) at 155 and team captain Joe Luecke (4-0) at 185. Luecke missed most of the season with a broken hand. He wrestled Thursday after his cast was removed. Walker had a kidney injury and has just returned to action. Bloom coach Ernie Thompson also had 105-pound Orr transfer Reggie Fleming newly eligible. . . . Proviso East (18-0) finished its season Friday night with a 50-12 victory over Hinsdale Central. The Pirates had a delegation of interested spectators at the Oak Park Invitational. Terry Murphy, Roosevelt Williams, Blair Walker and Bobby Walton were checking on the competition and pulling for conference rival LT.

GYMNASTICS

You can`t get any closer than York and Lyons Township did in Saturday`s West Suburban Conference meet at Downers Grove North. York edged the Lions 140.5-140.1. Kristie Engel, a sophomore who transferred to Lyons from Riverside-Brookfield this year with her sister Jeannie, won the all-around with a 9.08 average and three other events. She was first in uneven parallel bars (9.2), balance beam (9.1) and floor exercise (9.3). Her 8.7 in vaulting didn`t place. York senior Heather Harges spoiled Engel`s bid for a sweep with a 9.5 in vaulting. Harges, who finished fourth in all-around with an 8.925 average, tied with Downers Grove North`s Fran Sobie for first on beam (9.0). York`s Jean Nasti was second in vault (9.4). Lyons competed without senior all-arounder Tracy Kontur, who aggravated an injured left ankle Wednesday in a meet against York. ”Tracy`s points would have given us the meet,” said Lyons` coach Garen Williams. ”We were thrilled to do this well without her. There was some question that we could have used her, but we decided not to. We`re serious about state, for her and for the team. She`ll be back next Saturday at our (Hinsdale Central) regional.” . . . Naperville North edged Naperville Central 141.50-141.35 in Saturday`s Du Page Valley Conference meet at Wheaton North. Naperville North`s Karissa Ullrich won the all-around (9.01 average) and finished first on bars (9.4). Donna Oeffinger of Naperville Central took home a gold medal in vault (9.5), while teammate Hillary Hackendahl won floor (9.4) and Sara Johnson of Naperville North won the beam

(9.1).
