American Motors Corp. says it may phase out its huge but aging Jeep complex in Toledo while the union representing the 7,000 workers there has agreed to set a strike vote over unresolved grievances. Joseph Cappy, AMC`s executive vice president and chief operating officer, said the Toledo works might be replaced by adding an assembly line to an auto plant the company is planning. A site for the new plant is to be picked by spring from a list of locations in five states. Previous AMC statements said that the plant would build cars and the possibility of also building Jeeps wasn`t raised. Cappy said AMC was leaning toward a combination car-Jeep plant. It would take several years to build a new plant, and its completion would roughly coincide with the debut of redesigned versions of the Jeep Cherokee, Wagoneer and pick- ups, he said.
