Smith International Inc., a leading oil company, was ordered by a federal judge to pay more than $200 million to Hughes Tool Co. for infringing Hughes` patent on rubber seals for drilling bits. Attorneys said the damage award could be largest such judgment in U.S. history. It also could spell ruin for Smith, based in Newport Beach, Calif., after a 14-year legal fight.
