A 16-year-old youth was shot Friday in the left jaw after allegedly stealing an off-duty detective`s car and attempting to run over the police officer. Detective Everett Renfroe Jr., of the vice control division, said he had just finished repairing his auto and left it running in his driveway when the youth jumped in the car and backed up. He said that when he tried to stop the car, the youth backed across the street into a neighbor`s driveway and then roared forward, allegedly toward the police officer. The detective said he fired when he feared he would be crushed against a parked car. The suspect was listed in fair condition in Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park. He was charged with aggravated assault and attempted theft in a juvenile petition.
