Joseph Duell, a star of the New York City Ballet, fell to his death Sunday from the fifth floor of a West Side apartment building, police reported. They termed it an apparent suicide.

Duell, 29, had been appearing in a principal role in the ballet company`s revival of ”Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.”

Sgt. Diane Kubler, a police department spokeswoman, said the dancer jumped from the fifth-floor window of his apartment building on West 77th Street.

Duell joined the ballet company in 1975 and became a principal dancer in 1984. He had been scheduled to dance in Sunday evening`s performance, a spokeswoman for the company said.
