Westmont, No. 2 behind defending state champion Providence-St. Mel among Chicago-area Class A teams in The Tribune`s ratings, hammered Lisle 70-50 in the opener of the Class A Westmont regional Monday.

Westmont will meet Timothy Christian (11-13) Wednesday. Timothy disposed of winless Harvard School of the Independent School League 87-31 in the second game. Chris Chambliss and Bob Smith had 18 points each for Timothy, which put all 12 players in the scoring column. George Murray managed 18 for Harvard

(0-19).

Westmont (23-2) had little trouble flashing past Northeast Conference rival Lisle for the third time this season, despite Lisle`s slowdown tactics. The victory was the 11th in a row for Westmont.

Tim Porter, the Sentinels` scoring leader, led the way with 26 points on 12-for-22 shooting from the floor. Jeff Metz contributed 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Greg Reynolds scored 15 points and R.C. McLaurin 12 for Lisle (8-16), which trailed 16-8 after the first quarter, 28-16 at the intermission and 48-31 entering the final quarter.

Westmont, perhaps in its last season of athletic competition because funding of the school`s sports program depends on passage of a referendum next month, is the No. 1 seed in a regional that includes Nazareth Academy (18-6)

and Hales Franciscan (7-16), the only Class A school in the 16-team Chicago Catholic League.

The Sentinels, who lost to St. Mel in the sectional final in 1983 and 1984 and to Immaculate Conception in the regionals last year, are expected to meet Nazareth in the final. Nazareth holds one of the three victories over Westmont this season. The other losses were to Class AA Downers Grove South and Romeoville.

St. Benedict regional–Providence-St. Mel (21-5) overwhelmed Chicago Latin 101-36 behind Illya McGee`s 33 points, Albert Jones` 23 and Robert Turnbow`s 14. Danny Karatosic scored 13 for the Independent School League`s Romans (8-15), who trailed 55-17 at halftime. Scott Soren had 24 points and Danny Zoller 14 as ISL leader Francis Parker (19-7) blitzed Cathedral 81-49 in the second game. Bill Walton had 19 points for Cathedral (3-12).

Geneva regional–Kevin Belgrave scored 16 points, Jason Wilebski 14 and Tim Duda 10 as Lemont (11-14) rolled to a 27-14 halftime lead and coasted past Valley Lutheran (11-14) 66-44. Dale Kruse scored 14 points for the losers.

Somonauk regional–Unbeaten Newark, enjoying its finest season ever, breezed to its 26th straight victory with a 92-51 thrashing of undermanned Little 10 Conference rival Serena. Newark`s starters played only three quarters before coach Chuck Nelson let the reserves mop up. Larry Ness led the Norsemen with 20 points, Dave Olson added 18 and Larry Hilt had 17. Serena wound up at 7-13.

Huntley regional–Richmond-Burton (11-13) broke away from a 34-34 halftime tie with a 20-6 third-quarter blitz to stun Alden-Hebron 72-56. Brad Miller led the way with 20 points. Bill Rabelhofer added 19, and Scott Christensen chipped in with 12. Dave Cohlman had 16 for Alden-Hebron (20-3).

Farmington regional–Princeville (25-0), one of the top Class A tournament contenders, rolled over Brimfield 62-37. Garth Yess paced a balanced attack with 17 points.

GIRLS` BASKETBALL

Galaxy tournament–Deanna Kibelkis, the tournament`s most valuable player, hit a short jumper from the middle of the lane with 4 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift Bremen (20-5) to a 70-68 victory over Evergreen Park in the title game at Rich South. Kibelkis finished with 42 points. Erika Billish had 16 and Jole Burns 13 for Evergreen Park (19-3). Bremen is tied with Hinsdale South for the 20th spot in The Tribune`s ratings. Evergreen Park is ranked 18th. Top-seeded Lincoln-Way (20-2), which was upset by Evergreen Park in Saturday`s semifinals, stopped Rich East 74-64 for third place.

St. Gregory 70, Driscoll 27–The Greyhounds (20-0), No. 11 in The Tribune`s poll of Class A and AA Chicago-area powers, romped behind Vickey Pettrey`s 25 points and Tracey Escher`s 15.
