Sales in Illinois retail stores rose by 4.9 percent, to more than $2.7 billion, in 1985, according to an Illinois Retail Merchants Association survey of 58 companies representing 328 stores statewide. The trade group said the biggest percentage increase was posted by metropolitan Chicago stores, whose sales increased by 5.9 percent from 1984.
