CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “MJ” isn’t an ordinary jukebox musical. First, it’s about Michael Jackson, one of pop music’s most talented, electrifying and enigmatic singers ever. The production also boasts a sit-up-and-take-notice creative team that includes playwright Lynn Nottage, a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

“I didn’t even have to think two seconds,” she said, recalling the moment in 2018 when producer Lia Vollack approached her about writing the show’s book. “I was definitely in.”
