SANFORD, Fla. – Drivers heading west along Interstate 4 through Sanford might have caught a glimpse of this large astronaut statue during their commute.

It can be seen near Exit 104, though it’s most easily visible for those using the onramp from US Highway 17.

The statue stands around 15 feet tall on the premises of ACME Industrial Surplus, which provides machine parts, tools and electrical supplies for companies that need them.

It looks reminiscent of the classic “Moonman” icon used by MTV — and that’s no coincidence.

According to ACME owner Cameron Winfree, the statue was used in the MTV Music Awards at American Airlines Arena in Miami way back in 2004.

Winfree told News 6 that the company responsible for crafting the titanic Moonman statue — Ocean State Productions — was once located at the same warehouse ACME now operates from.

Around 15 years ago, he paid $300 to buy the statue, and it now sits on the side of the road to catch the eyes of passersby.

In fact, the statue could soon get a makeover, though that depends on whether Winfree gets the opportunity to do so.

“I just talked to the guy a couple of months ago who actually made it,” Winfree said. “I found out what I could paint it with, and it’s just getting the time to get out there and paint it again.”

However, the Moonman isn’t the only strange roadside attraction you can find along I-4.
