An overview of the hurricane season so far

AccuWeather's Bernie Rayno shares hurricane data for 2023 and what to expect for the remainder of the hurricane season.

00:00 Well, so far it's been a pretty busy hurricane season.

00:03 It's been fast and furious since mid to late August as we've seen storm after storm.

00:09 So within the Atlantic hurricane season again, which runs from June through November, we've

00:13 had 14 storms so far this year.

00:18 We're also, Nigel, which is our latest storm, will end up being the fourth major hurricane

00:23 of the Atlantic season here.

00:26 And just to tally it up, we've had six hurricanes, eight tropical storms, and we also had a subtropical

00:31 storm out of season.

00:33 It was well out in the Atlantic during the month of January.

00:36 So that's why the total for the entire year is 15 storms for the season here.

00:43 Most of the storms, notice where they've been, all in the Atlantic, except for Arlene and

00:49 Harold in the Gulf of Mexico.

00:51 And so far, we've only had one storm form in the Caribbean.

00:55 That's a little unusual.

00:56 And that was Hidalgo.

00:57 That was the storm that has had the biggest impact on the United States.

01:01 That made landfall as a category three hurricane, a major hurricane along the Big Bend of Florida.

01:06 Now, of course, we still have a lot of way to go here for the hurricane season.

01:10 So we are right around in here.

01:12 We're starting our decline in the historical number of storms that we see, but it's still

01:17 a long way to go through the hurricane season.

01:21 So I want to, again, end with our forecast.

01:24 Again, we have 15 storms right now.

01:27 We're thinking there's going to be around 17.

01:29 We've had six hurricanes.

01:31 We think there can be another one or two.

01:33 We're going to be closing in on four major hurricanes.

01:38 We think there could be up to five.

01:40 And so far, we've had two impacts on the United States.

01:44 We think there could be another one or two before the season is over.
