UPDATED:

Meteorologists are expecting another day of excessive heat in Hampton Roads going into the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield is warning of “very hot conditions” Saturday, with heat indices (or how hot it feels to the human body) potentially reaching 110 degrees. Temperature highs will be in the mid-90s, and humidity will stay in the mid-70s for most of the area. Temperatures Friday reached the mid-90s, but they did not surpass the high-temperature record of 98 degrees. Saturday’s record for Norfolk currently sits at 102 degrees, set in 1881.

Saturday’s heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Kayakers in Chesapeake had to be rescued from Lake Drummond after one of them had a heat-related emergency, according to the fire department. A pair of men set out from the Dismal Swamp Canal ramp at Ballahack Road at about 1:30 p.m. toward the lake, but the high temperatures prevented them from being able to return to the ramp. Cpt. Steven Bradley said emergency services were dispatched at 4:44 p.m. after one of the men reported symptoms of heat-related illness.

Medics on Boat 8 treated and transported him to another waiting medic unit on shore, where he received additional treatment and was released at the scene.

The weather service is encouraging residents to drink plenty of fluids and check in on sensitive groups, like older adults, young children and people with chronic illnesses.

Some relief is possible Sunday. The weather service reports high temperatures will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.
