Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise Part 1

The ending of a great story is always bittersweet, satisfying our craving for resolution to the conflicts that have tantalized us for so long, while simultaneously leaving us behind with a desire that may never be fulfilled—the wish for more time to explore the places that have become familiar to us, more time to spend with the characters we have come to adore. As fans, it is a feeling that we know well at Dark Horse, one that inspires every book we publish continuing a story once concluded elsewhere.

That is why the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics started from the same place the TV show did: creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. To us, they revealed untold chapters in the story of Team Avatar, chapters to be told in the comics.

Just as on the TV show Michael and Bryan teamed with the finest talents in animation to bring their vision to the screen, with the comics they have teamed with the Japanese art-duo Gurihiru and award-winning author Gene Luen Yang to continue their vision on the page.

This January, Avatar: The Last AirbenderThe Promise Part 1 begins a trilogy of original graphic novels that reveal what happens next to the heroes and villains from the TV show after the final episode. Taking place one year after the events of the last season, these graphic novels begin a new adventure for Aang and his friends that will change their lives and change their world.

With Gurihiru, Gene Luen Yang, best known for his graphic novel American Born Chinese, weaves a tale of a world learning the ways of peace after a century of war. It is a difficult lesson, one that will threaten to tear the friendship of Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko apart, and plunge the world back into war.

Like all fans, Dark Horse wants to return to our favorite places, see our old friends, only if they are the real deal, and not some shadowy facsimile.  That is why we are so glad, and so proud, to present to you The Promise Part 1—this is it, the genuine article. Team Avatar is back, and we can’t wait to show you what they’ve been up to.
