Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale by Sierra Hahn

shepherds taleYesterday we put the final touches on a book very near and dear to my heart—Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale by Joss and Zack Whedon. It's a favorite partly because of the creative team—obviously—and because it digs deep into the life and times of Shepherd "Derrial" Book. Remember him—the mysteriously badass Shepherd housed with the crew on Serenity? Yeah. That guy. His back story, which was never fully explored in the TV show or feature film, was so immense and too important that Joss decided it required its very own graphic novel. What you'll find is glorious artwork from Chris Samnee (perhaps best know for his work on Marvel's current Thor series) and a story that travels with Book through the ages, revealing to readers a man you may have thought you knew, but really had no idea… It's powerful and gut wrenching. It's exactly what I want from the story of Book, and yet so much more with unexpected twists and turns throughout.

Today Singer/Songwriter Marian Call (whose album "Got to Fly" was inspired by Firefly and Battlestar Galactica) toured the offices, and to my great pleasure she expressed her enthusiasm for the newest tale in the Firefly/Serenity-verse. Tucked away behind my desk, working away, I rarely get to engage with fans of the series, but when I do, I'm reminded of what an eager and loyal fan base this series—the show, the film, the comics—has. Thanks for that!

Can't wait for everyone to get their hands on this illuminating tale!
