The Promise of a Great Story - Guest Fan Blog

In only a matter of days, one of the world’s most rabid fandoms may very well receive the answers to questions that began almost four years ago. How will the Fire Nation citizens take the end of the war? Will peace last? Are the “shipping” wars finally over?

And perhaps most importantly, where the heck is Zuko’s mom?

Though fans such as myself are eagerly awaiting the Avatar spinoff Legend of Korra, there’s still a bit of closure required from the original series. With a world that includes influences from classic animation and Eastern philosophy, the potential for storytelling in the Avatar universe is endless. But as exciting as the prospect of moving forward in time and following the next Avatar is, the fact remains that there is a young cast of engaging characters that still have plenty more to say and do.

My biggest hope and concern for The Promise is that it will live up to the hype and anticipation. For the first new Avatar: The Last Airbender material since the controversial film adaptation in 2010, the bar is raised extremely high. However, with the talented team over at Gurihiru creating the art and Eisner winner Gene Yang handling the story, the chances are looking good.

As we approach the publication date of part 1 of The Promise, all I can say is that I can’t wait to jump back into a world that captured my imagination as a child in 2005. We all may have differing opinions on couples and characters, but in the end, this is a continuation of a story that we all loved. To the current fans, the wait is almost over. And to those of you with no previous knowledge of the Avatar world, I hope that you pick up a copy of The Promise and give it a try.

You might be surprised at how quickly you’re hooked.
