HGTVs 2016 Urban Oasis in Ann Arbor

The roomy front porch has ample seating for entertaining. HGTV designer Brian Patrick Flynn says he took the muddy colors typically used on Craftsman bungalows and "turned them up," using a deep pine green, sage green and a black-brown trim.

HGTV tapped Plymouth architect Dawn Zuber of Studio Z Architecture to redesign the house. She removed the roof, added a story level and created a more modern look inside. "My favorite space of the house is the vaulted ceilings," says Zuber.

The living room, which features a 21-foot vaulted ceiling, is open and airy. The large fireplace surround creates an architectural focal point.

Three pendant lights from Overstock.com hang over an island-prep sink in the kitchen. The custom Roman shades are by Lou Lou Designs in Whitmore Lake.

An open dining room, which can seat six, flows right into the kitchen.

The Aurelle Home Teak Coffee Table with Cast Iron Legs adds texture to the living room. Above it hangs a mid-century modern chandelier. "We didn't want to create a cliche Craftsman look," says Flynn, the designer.

Above the sofa hangs a painting of a 1957 Chevrolet station wagon by artist Celery Jones, a nod to the home's proximity to Detroit.

A bold striped ceiling adds a focal point to the first floor master bedroom suite. "This is the one room in the house that is a nod to college," says Flynn, the designer. A one-of-a-kind wolverine painting is a nod to the University of Michigan.

A geometric tile covers the entire first floor bathroom. Flynn says he chose to cover the ceiling as well because of the lack of natural light. "The idea was to have something to look at from every angle while you're in the bathroom," Flynn says.

Zuber's architectural drawings are framed and hang on the wall leading to the second floor.

Two kayaks are displayed in the garage, which has two doors, one of which leads to a large screen porch.

The large screen porch is perfect for hosting parties on game day.

Large ottomans serve as coffee tables and extra seating.

Permeable paver steps lead to the backyard which includes a bioswale to help process the lot's rainwater.

This is the backyard Bio-Swale / Rain Garden which takes all storm water from the rear of the residence and filters through gravel and plants before the water infiltrates into the ground.

On one side of the backyard are farm-to-table garden beds for plants.

Four galvanized steel horse troughs elevate vegetables for easier access and keeps the food away from animals.
