A new executive has taken the wheel at AAA Michigan, one of the state’s largest insurers.

Joseph “Joe” J. Richardson Jr. was elected the company’s president and chief executive officer by its board of directors, officials said Monday.

“I am honored to have been given this opportunity to build on a solid foundation of success,” Richardson said in a statement. “We are a people-oriented business, and I am committed to investing in our employees, products, service delivery and communications in a way that meets the changing needs of our members, who are the lifeblood of our organization.”

Richardson succeeds Charles “Chuck” H. Podowski, who retired after a 17-year career.

Before joining AAA Michigan, Richardson served as president and head of distribution for Farmers Insurance Group.

AAA Michigan has 1.4 million members in the state. It’s part of The Auto Club Group, ACG, which serves more than 9 million members in 11 states.

The Michigan insurance company will celebrate its 100th anniversary in June.
