The legacy of Detroit music producer J Dilla will be celebrated with the opening of the multimedia exhibition, "I Got Beats in these Fingertips" Friday, July 12, at Wayne State University.

This exhibit, which is open July 12-Sept. 20, also highlights the legacy of Houston producer DJ Screw.

J Dilla

Dilla, who died in 2006 at age 32, is considered to be one of the most influential producers in hip-hop and popular music. DJ Screw, who died in 2000, was an influential figure in Houston's hip-hop scene.

Through fine art, video, sound installations and more, two floors of the exhibit will explore the similarities and differences between the regional sounds of Detroit and Houston hip-hop, as well as the influence of these two pioneering producers.

A J Dilla tribute is planned Saturday at the Cube inside The Max in Detroit.

The event also marks the conclusion of the third annual J Dilla Music Tech Teaching Workshop, a collaboration between Wayne State University and the Save the Music Foundation.

Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be provided.
