Handblown glass ornaments available at Warren antiques store
Kevin Boyce is a longtime glass artist who creates beautiful ornaments and figurines. Some of Boyce’s ornaments are now available at the Silver Quill Antiques and Gift Store, 22813 Van Dyke in Warren. Owner Linda Sirko says there are a range of colors: jewel tones, pastels and Christmas reds and greens. Prices ranges from $12-$16. Call (586) 756-8180.
Ethan Allen design centers compete for best holiday table design
Metro Detroit’s five Ethan Allen design centers are going head-to-head in a decorating contest this holiday season to create the best holiday tablescape design. Centers in Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Birmingham and Novi have each designed a special tablescape and they’re asking customers to go to Facebook to vote for their favorite one. The design center with the most likes will win a lunch for the team, says Laurie Radike, design center manager of Ethan Allen in Sterling Heights. On Facebook, search for “Ethan Allen” and Sterling Heights. There, you’ll find photos of each design center’s table. Hit “like” to vote. The contest runs through Dec. 20.
Soap, glass, fiber featured at Ferndale art show
Twenty-five local artists who make everything from soap to fiber will sell their wares at Saturday’s Ridge Fine Art & Handmade Wares Show at the Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2441 Pinecrest, in Ferndale. Now in its 17th year, this year’s show also will offer jewelry, ceramics, tile, wearables, candles, and glass (pictured is printmaker Marcy Davy’s work). Art Van Furniture goes Modern
When Art Van Furniture blew the lid off its Warren store with its annual holiday party earlier this month, it also unveiled a sparkly new furniture gallery that’s all about mid-century modern furniture. The new 4,000-square-foot gallery called Modern, located in a space once occupied by Paul’s TV at the store on 14 Mile, features sleek sofas and sectionals, all with a smaller profile. There are funky metal light fixtures and accents. Art Van spokeswoman Diane Charles says furniture styles are cyclical and what was big in the 1950s and ’60s is back, especially among millennials. Charles says Modern galleries also are in place at Art Van stores outside Chicago and in Toledo and pieces will eventually be available in all of its stores.
West Michigan artist creates personalized plates, platters for holidays
Families across Metro Detroit will gather around dining tables next week to give thanks and their tableware will take center stage. To create an “aww” moment with your family, make sure you have just the right mix of plates and platters. Grand Haven artist Teresa Patteuw of Remember When Ceramics makes plates for every special occasion, including Thanksgiving. Her precious “Give Thanks” porcelain plate comes in three sizes and prices range from $25 for a 6-by-6 plate to $65 for 12-by-12 plate. Made in Teresa’s Lake Michigan Beach studio, she says it is fired for more than 40 hours at 2,000 degrees. “The design is guaranteed to never fade or scratch off,” she says. Five homes open doors on Indian Village tour
A popular holiday home tour was missing from Homestyle’s tour list a few weeks ago: the 2015 Indian Village Holiday Tour on Dec. 6. Presented by the Indian Village Woman’s Garden Club, this year’s tour features five historic homes decked out for the holidays. Tickets are $40. Tours leave every half-hour starting at 1 p.m. and running until 4 p.m. from the Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church, 2411 Iroquois.
