Hundreds of tubers, cuttings at dahlia sale

The Southeastern Michigan Dahlia Society will hold its annual tuber sale sale from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. May 5 at Telly’s Greenhouse, 3301 John R. in Troy (head to the barn). Gardeners eager to add to their dahlias or give them a try will get to choose from more than 700 dahlia tubers; cuttings also will be available. Prices will range from $3-$4 per tuber and proceeds fund the society’s annual dahlia show and competition in mid-September. Doors open at 9 a.m. sharp. DIA hosts panel discussion on ‘Home’

Home is so much more than a place. It’s a mood, feeling, even a state of mind. The Detroit Institute of Arts is exploring the concept of home with its current exhibition, “Making Home: Contemporary Works from the DIA,” and some of the artists involved will participate in a panel discussion, “The Spaces in Between,” at 6 p.m. May 3. The panel will include Tyree Guyton, founder of the Heidelberg Project, along with artists Jane Hammond (whose work is pictured) and Carlos Diaz. They’ll discuss the techniques and approaches they use and the contrasts between local and global thoughts on community building, urban development, and the creation of “home.” The panel talk is free; it’s hosted by DIA auxiliary Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Southfield’s mid-century modern tour returns May 6

Southfield was Michigan’s fastest growing city in the ’60s and has a gold mine of mid-century modern homes and buildings designed by some of the biggest names in architecture. Now is your chance to see some of those architectural gems during the Southfield Mid Century Modern Architecture Tour on May 6. The 2 1/2 hour tour, which starts at 2 p.m., will go through Emmanuel Lutheran Church (pictured), the former B’nai David Synagogue and two subdivisions known for their mid-century homes, Northland Gardens and Plumbrooke Estates. Tour tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the tour (if available). It starts and ends at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 27375 Bell Road. Pontiac glass studio opens doors for spring show

Epiphany Studios in Pontiac is gearing up for its annual Spring Show May 4-6, which will include hourly demonstrations, sales and more. Epiphany is owned by renowned glass artist April Wagner, who has created glass works of art for all over the country. New at this year’s sale are special handcrafted rocks glasses. They’re $45 each. Epiphany also will offer special cat- and dog-themed items and a portion of each sale will go to the Michigan Humane Society. The Spring Show runs from 4-8 p.m. May 4 and 12-6 p.m. May 5-6. Plymouth pottery sale features garden items

Handcrafted pottery for the garden will take center stage at the Village Potters Guild’s annual Spring Sale May 3-6 in Plymouth. Birdbaths and other garden items, along with serveware and tableware from more than 20 artists, will be available. Each item is made in Plymouth. The sale runs from 5-8 p.m. May 3; 11 a.m.-7 p.m. May 4; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. May 5; and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. May 6. The Potters Guild is at 326 N. Main in Plymouth.
