Probation for 2 with weapons at Detroit-Windsor tunnel

Detroit – — A judge in Windsor, Ontario, has given two Michigan men three years’ probation for trying to cross into Canada with knives, brass knuckles and a smoke bomb.

The judge last week also fined 29-year-old Kyle Martens of Clarkston and 18-year-old Ernest Edwards of Alba.

Martens pleaded guilty to possession of brass knuckles, and Edwards pleaded guilty to possession of brass knuckles and two butterfly knives.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel under the Detroit River was closed for three hours on Jan. 20 after Windsor police found the weapons and smoke bomb in an SUV.

The smoke bomb was classified as a firework, not an explosive.

Authorities later said the men were on their way to see a friend.
