A helicopter crashed into a farmer's field Thursday in London Township, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

The crash happened around 10:45 a.m. near Oelke and Yensch roads. The helicopter pilot and a passenger were not injured, according to a written statement by Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough.

The Sheriff's Office did not name the pilot, only identifying him as 51-year-old Newport resident.

The pilot told first responders on the scene he was on his way back to Willow Run Airport when the helicopter began to experience engine trouble, sheriff's officials said.

He used autorotation to control his descent, "ultimately crashing into the field," according to the sheriff's statement.

The Sheriff's Office said it would not release any more information Thursday as an investigation, which includes the Federal Aviation Administration, has started.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at (734) 240-7700.
