Tigers' Kevin McGonigle takes biggest jump among MLB Pipeline's updated top 100 prospects

The Detroit Tigers enter Tuesday's opener of a three-game series at the Minnesota Twins 15 games behind the American League Central Division lead, and eight games below .500.

The farm, it seems, is in a little better shape.

MLB Pipeline on Monday night rolled out a refreshed top-100 prospects list, with Tigers infield prospect Kevin McGonigle taking the biggest jump within the list. McGonigle, 19 and playing for Single-A Lakeland, moved up 31 spots, from No. 96 to No. 65.

The Tigers selected McGonigle at No. 37 overall in last July's MLB Draft out of Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.

"Last year’s 37th overall pick McGonigle very rarely misses on swings in the zone, backing up the belief that he’ll be a plus hitter at every stop," MLB Pipeline reporter Sam Dykstra writes. "His power has played better than expected as a 19-year-old at Single-A, prompting this jump up."

In 50 games this season for the Flying Tigers, McGonigle is hitting .326 with three home runs and 30 RBIs. He also has 13 doubles and three triples to help contribute to an .879 OPS, adding 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts.

He's split his time between shortstop (25 games) and second base (16).

McGonigle is one of four Tigers prospects in the top 100, joining outfielder Max Clark (10), righthander Jackson Jobe (11) and third baseman Jace Jung (42).

The Tigers, Washington Nationals and Tampa Bay Rays are the only MLB teams with two prospects in the top 11.

Clark, last year's No. 3 overall pick in the MLB Draft, also is at Lakeland, where he is hitting .269 with a .753 OPS. He has five homers, 48 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 64 games.

Jobe is rehabbing from a hamstring injury at Single-A West Michigan before an eventual return to Double-A Erie. Jobe (No. 3 overall pick in 2021) owns a 2.10 ERA and 0.90 WHIP between the two stops, with 32 strikeouts and 12 walks in 25.1 innings pitched.

Jung has swatted 11 home runs in 64 games at Triple-A Toledo this season. He is on a rehab assignment at Lakeland with wrist soreness.
