LS2 Sheryl Chapman, from Waianae, Hawaii, is serving in the U.S. Navy assigned to 7th Naval Construction Regiment during Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024.
Chapman graduated from Waianae High School in 2008.
“Growing up in Hawaii, I learned the spirit of aloha,” said Chapman. “I wanted to be able to spread that.”
Chapman joined the Navy eight years ago and now serves as a logistics specialist.
“Being from Hawaii, I've always enjoyed the water. So, I joined the Navy,” said Chapman. “I also wanted to see the world.”
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
“My experience at RIMPAC has been great,” said Chapman. “Right now, I work with the Seabees and provide them with repair parts. It’s come full circle being back home!”
The U.S. Navy operates around the world and around the clock promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
“I love being able to travel, as well as the opportunity to spend time with my family,” said Chapman. “I also love meeting new people and meeting people from everywhere.”
Chapman has achieved many accomplishments from the opportunities provided by military service.
“I am proud of the family I've created. I found my husband in the Navy,” said Chapman. “I was able to build a family with that person.”
Chapman is honored to serve America through military service.
“Military service means to protect and provide for my family,” said Chapman. “And to instill the values of honor, courage and commitment.”
Chapman is grateful to her loved ones for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I would like to thank my family, especially my mom,” added Chapman. “Without her support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Twenty-nine nations, 40 surface ships, three submarines, 14 national land forces, more than 150 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC in and around the Hawaiian Islands, June 27 to Aug. 1. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2024 is the 29th exercise in the series that began in 1971.
