Briton Laura Muir set a new national record in the 1500m as her Kenyan rival Faith Kipyego smashed her own world record to win at the Paris Diamond League. It was the second world record to tumble at the meet, with Ukraine's world high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh breaking the mark that stood for 37 years, making a big statement ahead of the Olympics.

Laura Muir set a new British mark in the 1500m as two major world records fell at the Paris Diamond League.
The 30-year-old finished in third with a time of 3:53.79 to break her own national record set when she claimed silver at the Tokyo Olympics.
However, she and the rest of the field were no match for double Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, who smashed her own world record with a stunning time of 3:49.04 to win ahead of Australian Jessica Hull.
Kipyegon had an incredible 2023 season, setting the world records in the 1500m, 5000m and the mile, but had not raced this year until Kenya’s Olympic trials last month.
However, she showed no signs of rust in Paris as she showcased why she is a heavy favourite to take out her third-straight Olympic title in the 1500m next month.
"I knew the world record was possible because I recently ran very fast in Kenya. I was coming here to run my race and see what shape I'm in to defend my title at the Olympics," said Kipyegon.
British champion Georgia Bell ran a personal best of 3:56.54 to finish in fifth, while fellow Brit Katie Snowden claimed ninth place with a time of 3:58.13.

Mahuchikh breaks 37-year high jump world record

Earlier in the day, Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine broke the high jump world record that stood for 37 years as she made a statement ahead of the Paris Olympics.
The reigning world champion cleared a new best mark of 2.10m, beating the previous record set by Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova in 1987.
Mahuchikh, 22, secured victory by clearing the 2.03m mark after her closets rival Nicola Olyaslagers of Australia failed in three attempts.
She then set a Ukrainian record of 2.07m before clearing the 2.10m mark on her first attempt.
“Coming into this competition, I had feelings that I could jump 2.07 metres and maybe 2.10 metres,” Mahuchikh said. “Finally I signed Ukraine to the history of world athletics.”
