The Soul of a City - T.J. Ravenscroft
Historical Evolution of Urban Culture
Despite the improvements in the quality of life, these cities were constant bearers of severe human rights violations. The basic population stratification standards, albeit harsher and more violent than rural societies, were implemented. These cities were to be built and protected not just as opposing poles to the deserted space, but also within themselves. The strategies for avoiding the unleashed violence were many and varied, ranging from building fences and gates, having watchmen and creating surveillance networks within houses, satirizing institutions, or simply making it look as if they possessed nothing of considerable value.

They have finally become spaces where people so genuinely represent themselves that choosing to leave them often amounts to making a critical mistake. Flavio Gikovate, the well-known São Paulo-based psychiatrist, asserts that we fail to understand many people's choices for living in small towns, even when they don't have very strong emotional ties to them, since their possibilities must necessarily be limited.

It is the general public's frame of reference when talking about good cities, seen both by the daily citizens and by the ones that visit the New York's Empire State Building. Currently, when talking about urban notion in general terms, we arrive at aspects more collective, such as urban planning, environmental problems, or economic aspects. The castle is the theoretical basis for understanding an urban culture, and that, in simpler terms, architecture is the crust that intervenes within the
