Mediterranean Diet: The Basics

The Mediterranean diet is a largely plant-based diet that calls for eating whole, minimally processed foods and cutting back on processed ones. It’s named after the people who live along the Mediterranean Sea, whose diets are high in whole grains; seeds, nuts, and legumes; fruits and vegetables; olive oil; fish; and some dairy and eggs, dark chocolate, and red wine. Eating foods found on the Mediterranean diet may help prevent or manage a variety of health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and cancer.
