Bargain Hunt's Charles Hanson pleads not guilty to assault and coercive behaviour charges
Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson has been bailed on the condition that he doesn't contact his wife Rebecca Hanson.
Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court today to face seven charges including assault and coercive behaviour. The 45-year-old denies all allegations and previously said he "never behaved aggressively or unlawfully towards my family".
In court today, the TV auctioneer pleaded not guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour and assault against his wife Rebecca Hanson. District Judge Andrew Meachin said the charges were "wholly unsuitable" for trial at the magistrates' court and sent the case to Derby Crown Court.
Meachin also handed the defendant conditional bail not to contact Rebecca or go to the family address in Quarndon except on one occasion to collect personal belongings. He will appear at the crown court on February 7.
Charles was charged last month following a police investigation into a domestic abuse row. He previously stated to having "difficult times" in his marriage and that he would be "cooperating fully with the investigation and legal process".
In a statement released by his representatives, he told Express.co.uk: "I deny all of the charges. I have never behaved aggressively or unlawfully towards my family. We have been through some difficult times in our marriage and it is extremely sad that this has become a criminal matter.
"I will be co-operating fully with the investigation and legal process."
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police confirmed: "The force was called to reports of a domestic incident at an address in Church Road, Quarndon in June (2023).
"A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of assault and was released on police bail while enquiries continued.
"On 14 December, Charles Hanson was charged with seven alleged offences: Assault/ill treatment/neglect or abandonment of a child/young person to cause unnecessary suffering or injury and assault/ill-treat/neglect/abandon a child/young person to cause unnecessary suffering or injury."

At the time, he was released on police bail.
A source previously told The Sun about the alleged row: "It is not the sort of place you expect police to turn up. But a car came and they spoke to Charles. It is a tiny village so a few people have been talking."
Charles moved into his £900,000 luxury property with Rebecca, who he shares two children with, in 2014, four years after they tied the knot together in Derbyshire.
They met through mutual friends in 2008 and their wedding included guests from Bargain Hunt including experts Kate Bliss, David Barby and Jonathan Pratt as well as presenter Tim Wonnacott.
He first appeared on Bargain Hunt in 2002, becoming the youngest expert to appear on the show aged 25 at the time. He later launched his firm Hansons London in 2008.
In an interview with Express.co.uk last year, Charles opened up about the mistakes he's made in his long career path. Talking about his firm, he explained: "It was a sort of big thing to start my own. So when I was 27 years old, I wasn't married, had no dependents and you know, I made a few mistakes but you learn and you build it slowly."
