The hunt for Dr. Michael Mosley has "intensified" after it emerged the TV doctor "wasn't feeling well" after he left his friends at the beach to go home.

The investigation into his baffling disappearance is set to ramp up - three days after Dr Mosley went missing on Wednesday afternoon.

The path Dr Mosley is thought to have taken "is rocky but only takes 10 minutes to walk", the mayor of Symi, Eleftherios Papakalodoukas said.

Greek journalist Ionna Niaoti told Talk TV: "It is understood that about 1.30pm local time, he said he was not feeling very well and he wanted to return home.

"So he went to a coastal path reaching the closest village of Pedi, and this was the last time somebody saw him in Pedi."

Here Express.co.uk looks back at the whole timeline of Dr Michael Mosley's disappearance and everything we know so far

Dr Mosley was first reported as missing on Thursday after being seen on Wednesday on the island of Symi where he was on a publicity tour with his wife, Clare.

The This Morning star set off hiking along St Nicholas Beach at 1.30pm on Wednesday and his wife raised concerns when he didn't return for six hours.

He decided to head back to his home in the area of Pedi wearing a pair of shorts, a blue polo shirt, a blue baseball cap, and sunglasses.

Police say the doctor left his phone on the beach with another couple to return to his home in the Pedi area.

Locals also said it is "pretty difficult" to get lost on the island "even in the most remote areas".

Where Michael Mosley was last seen

Dr Mosley is thought to have undertaken the hiking trail linking the port of Symi and St Nicholas Beach.

A police source reportedly with intimate knowledge of the search and rescue operation told the Daily Mail: "We have also applied to the civil protection ministry in Athens for a helicopter and special dogs to be brought in.

"We are focusing on the area of the path we believe Michael would have taken from the beach in Ayios Nikolaos [St Nicholas] to Pedi but as so much time has elapsed since he went missing we have also expanded our search to other parts of the island."

Symi Mayor Eleftherios Papakalodoukas expressed disbelief over the situation, considering the island's modest size and dense population. Symi, part of the Dodecanese archipelago, covers just 65 km2.

Describing it as "unbearable", Mr Papakalodoukas said: "One could easily faint in such conditions”. He added that Michael "wanted to walk back from the beach, but that’s a distance of about an hour and a half and there are shortcuts he may have taken”.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "It is a very small, controlled area, full of people. So, if something happened to him there, we would have found him by now."

A local Facebook group post confirmed that search and rescue teams from Athens are en route to the Dodecanese island, with authorities reporting they have found "no trace whatsoever" of the health expert.

Representatives for Dr Mosley, who is believed to have set off on a hike, have also confirmed the ongoing search, expressing their deep concern.

Constantina Dimoglidou, a senior spokesperson for the Greek police, confirmed that searches began early Thursday morning but have so far yielded no significant findings

They said: "There is just no trace of him. None whatsoever and that means that for us at least, every potential scenario is open and being investigated."

Witness accounts

Witnesses have claimed they saw TV's Dr Michael Mosley after his coastal walk but police have still be unable to locate the This Morning expert.

The mayor claimed some said they saw him talking to a woman after leaving the beach, but others say they saw him talking to a man in Pedi, according to The Sun.

Police theories on disappearance

Senior Police Spokesman Constantina Dimoglidou said: "We have now asked the fire brigade to assist in the operation in the case that he may have slipped, tripped, fallen, even bitten by a snake, remaining injured somewhere."

One scenario being examined is that he fell off a rock and then into the sea meaning that the search and rescue operations will be more complex than if he had an accident on the ground.

Local expert George Evgenidis said authorities may now extend the search for Dr Mosley to the surrounding ocean. He added: “As far as I understand, the authorities are looking more into the scenario that he fell off the cliff and then into the sea.
