BBC Breakfast: Jon Kay says 'there's no escape from Carol Kirkwood'

BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has admitted she doesn't have time to worry about what rival show Good Morning Britain is doing because she is "too busy". The recently married star admitted that she doesn't know what they are up to as she never watches.

"You want to be on top of your game if there's other people out there who are doing the same thing. But because they are on at the same time as me in the morning I don't get to see them," she admitted.

Questioned about a rivalry with the ITV flagship show she explained: "I don't even know what the other channel is doing to be honest because I'm too busy. So I certainly don't feel it. I don’t know if the others do; you'd have to ask," she told Radio Times as she celebrated the show's 40th anniversary with presenters past and present.

In the same chat she also addressed the future of breakfast television when asked about the latest channels on the UK TV, including GB News and TalkTV. “I think that's just what's going to happen in [the] future isn’t it? And it's good to have competition, if you want to call it that, because it keeps you sharp."

Carol first appeared on BBC Breakfast in 1997 making her the show's longest serving presenter. She joined after a year at the now defunct The Weather Channel and she underwent training under the guidance of the BBC at the Met Office.

She has gone on to host the weather across the entire BBC News network including BBC World News, BBC News at Six and she also presents the live forecasts as part of the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon.

Away from work the 61-year-old married partner Steve Randall at Christmas last year.

The couple tied the knot at a "romantic and intimate" ceremony in Buckinghamshire.

The news was, fittingly, announced on BBC Breakfast a few days later by Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt.

Pictures from the day show her beaming with happiness as she and her new husband posed for pictures.

Looking every inch the beautiful bride, she opted for a bardot-style floor-length gown completed with a dainty necklace, while her new husband, who is 13 years her junior, wore a grey waistcoat and trousers covered with a smart jacket.

Adding to her look, the BBC star styled her hair in an elegant up-do and wore carefully placed natural make-up.

Commenting on their big day, Carol said: "It was the most perfect and romantic and intimate wedding. We are both so incredibly happy."

BBC Breakfast is on BBC One weekdays at 6am.
