National treasure Maureen Lipman has been taking dancing lessons after finding love again, but has vowed never to go on Strictly.

The Olivier award-winning actress, who currently plays battle-axe Evelyn Plummer in Coronation Street, got together with her new partner, business consultant David Turner, after the death of her husband Guido Castro in 2021. Dame Maureen revealed the pair started dancing in the kitchen and decided to take it further.

“We did have some dancing lessons. We wanted to learn the tango but she gave us the foxtrot. The foxtrot is dull isn’t it?

“We will do it for ourselves but not for the world. We are dancing in the kitchen and maybe on the dance floor even. We have done seven steps of the foxtrot so far.”

But the 78-year-old says she will not be following in Angela Rippon’s footsteps by taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.

She revealed: “I have been asked but I am not very good at taking public criticism. I am pretty **** at it really. I’d either cry or punch somebody.

“The judges would get it if I was to do the show.”

The actress, also known for her role as Beattie in the 1980s BT adverts, was made a Dame in 2021.
