Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has revealed the shocking amount of alcohol he would drink to himself on a typical night out.

The Great British Menu star, who quit drinking after he reached nearly 30 stone following years of boozing, opened up about his habits on an episode of the Comfort Eating podcast with Grace Dent.

It was reported in March that Tom would drink "lager in the shower" and viewed alcohol as an "escape", but once he admitted the amount he would consume on a "big night out", Grace questioned how the chef was still alive.

Tom said: "I would start off with two pints of Negroni - like, I would drink pints of Negroni to start, yeah. To start, yeah. And that's just the start; then we're on the lagers.

"You do six pints of lager as you're quick finishing at the pub, cleaning down and then go out. And then it would be... Grace, I really don't know, but it could easily be..."

He continued: "On a big night out, it would probably be 20 pints of lager, two pints of Negroni and a pint of gin." Grace said she had "two questions" to this revelation, to which Tom replied: "How am I alive?"

Grace explained that she was "being honest" and "not even laughing" and asked how he's "not dead", with Tom revealing: "Well, I'm very good at it; I'm very big - had to stop, just went, 'That's it; I'm done'.

Grace followed up by asking why Tom thought he was drinking to this extent, with the chef replying that he "loved it".

Tom has been in the cookery business for more than three decades, but he previously said drinking served as an "escape" from the high pressure nature of the work.

The BBC host also admitted that would return home and raid his drinks cabinet and would often indulge in a large Negroni cocktail and lager before ending with gin and tonic.

The Michelin-star chef quit alcohol in the run-up to his 40th birthday, but when the big day arrived, he ended up going on a five-day bender.

Despite this, Tom is now teetotal and managed to lose 12 stone over five years after ditching the booze and making some lifestyle changes.

He told The Andy Jaye Podcast in 2021 that he reached a point in his life where he was reflecting on his age, what he was doing and what was happening in his life.

Tom said he went on to make "massive" lifestyle changes, stopped drinking, and "stopped trying to be a massive idiot".
